Cannot See Nano in Device Manager, ITunes or Ipod Updater

Help! I purchased a new Nano 3 weeks ago and I have been struggling with it ever since. I had it working very briefly, with some songs loaded. However, I then applied the lastest update (03-23) and my nano hasn't worked since. I've tried everything. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. The Nano does not show up in Windows Device Manager, and it does not show up in Itunes or in ipod Updater. In all the postings I've read with suggested solutions the nano was at least showing up SOMEWHERE. Mine doesn't show up in any of the three places. The songs I had loaded onto the Ipod disappeared, although they still show on my computer in ITunes. I have 2 USB 2.0 ports, and I've tried switching between those, but that still doesn't work. I am able to plug my Palm into either of the 2 ports and do a Hotsync, so I know the ports themselves do work. One post suggested putting the nano into disk mode before opening up the ipod updater. I have tried and tried to get my nano into disk mode and I can't get it to do that. The Apple logo comes up, I try to press Select and Play/Pause but it just comes up with the language selection list. I click on "English" and it brings up the regular menu. I do remember my computer restarting with the Nano still connected when I was working on this problem early on. Could that have damaged something or reset something? I've spent hours and hours over the past couple weeks on this problem and I'm truly stumped. Can anyone help? At this point I don't know what else to do except take it back to Best Buy. Thank you in advance to anyone who can advise.

OK I might be the only thicky out here but I thought I had the same problem and have been trying everything for days with no luck. I thought restore was the same as reset and didn't want to lose what was on the ipod even though I couldn't put anything else on. However just did a reset, holding menu and centre buttons together till apple logo comes up, and now it all works fine. Sorry if you've all tried it but worked for me. Believe me I tried everything else.

wow i cant believe it but all of us have the same problem with the lastest update of the software(03-23), cuz it looks that the problem begins when we try to update our ipods, so take this advice my friends, try to never update yur ipod anymore, is the best thing you can do, i can neither hear music nor see my pictures on my ipod, take your ipod to best buy and ask for replacement, you are so lucky cuz at least you are in us but i am in venezuela and a friend of mine broght me the ipod in florida so i just have to wait him to travel to see if they replace my ipod or ask for reapiring service, if he get back with a new ipod i will put the songs inside and then i will never plug in to my pc, i can charge the battery in my brother's car, bye man good luckUser uploaded file

I was thinking about the problems people were having with the Nano disk access still being locked even after killing the ipodservice.exe and itunedhelper.exe processes. It occurred to me that anyone who can:

- see the ipod is attached in disk mode
- has killed ipodservice.exe and itunedhelper.exe
- cannot reformat the drive because "device media is write protected"

Should probably check that they don't have anything running that might be picking up the usb connection like..

- your daemon application
- virus checker
- spyware checker

Worth a try.

This same thing is happening to us. We tried to follow the advise given (Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool). However, when we tried to Google it, too many choices! Does anyone have a specific site we can get to it? Also, the iPod Nano, after all the songs disappeared and iTunes no longer recognizes that there is an iPod connected to it, we are unable to see any way to put the iPod into Disk Mode.

Basically, I need specifics on getting that tool downloaded so I can get my Nano back! Thanks for any help!

Believe it or not, after 2 1/2 months I finally resolved my problem yesterday, although this solution isn't for everyone. We bought a brand new computer, which I hooked up yesterday. I installed ITunes on our new computer and connected my Nano. It didn't recognize my Ipod as an Ipod, but a new disk drive (drive I) I showed up in My Computer when I plugged in the Nano. I followed the directions I'd read in another post: "go into My Computer with the IPod connected, right click it (I clicked drive I), wait till the right click menu comes up (could take a few minutes), click Format, wait for the Formate window to come up (again could take a few minutes), and format the iPod with the default settings there (FAT32, Default allocation size, and Quick format NOT checked)." The directions were to then open up the iPod Updater and restore the iPod, however when I opened up the iPod Updater it didn't recognize the iPod and wouldn't let me do a restore. It was late, so I quit and plugged my Nano into the wall outlet to let it fully charge overnight. In the morning I powered up my computer, ran our spyware and anivirus programs to make sure the computer was clean, plugged in my Nano and HURRAY!!! It's working again! I don't completely understand why . . . I never did a restore, just the reformat, but it's working User uploaded file

Countless hours on this over the past two months . . . As I stated above, this is my first experience with Apple, and I have to say I am totally unimpressed with Apple's response to the problems everyone has had with the 3-23 updater. At least my Nano is finally working.
