Cannot See Nano in Device Manager, ITunes or Ipod Updater

Help! I purchased a new Nano 3 weeks ago and I have been struggling with it ever since. I had it working very briefly, with some songs loaded. However, I then applied the lastest update (03-23) and my nano hasn't worked since. I've tried everything. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. The Nano does not show up in Windows Device Manager, and it does not show up in Itunes or in ipod Updater. In all the postings I've read with suggested solutions the nano was at least showing up SOMEWHERE. Mine doesn't show up in any of the three places. The songs I had loaded onto the Ipod disappeared, although they still show on my computer in ITunes. I have 2 USB 2.0 ports, and I've tried switching between those, but that still doesn't work. I am able to plug my Palm into either of the 2 ports and do a Hotsync, so I know the ports themselves do work. One post suggested putting the nano into disk mode before opening up the ipod updater. I have tried and tried to get my nano into disk mode and I can't get it to do that. The Apple logo comes up, I try to press Select and Play/Pause but it just comes up with the language selection list. I click on "English" and it brings up the regular menu. I do remember my computer restarting with the Nano still connected when I was working on this problem early on. Could that have damaged something or reset something? I've spent hours and hours over the past couple weeks on this problem and I'm truly stumped. Can anyone help? At this point I don't know what else to do except take it back to Best Buy. Thank you in advance to anyone who can advise.

ok this is not just because of the update. i just bought this thing. it came with the 1-10-06 version and i can't get it going. i can't do anything because the only way to charge it is by hooking it up to the usb...... WHICH DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT!!!!!!!! i tried downloading the HP thing, but i don't know what to do next. i'm not really sure how to switch to disc mode but i don't think i could do it anyway because the thing is not even charged yet.

i bought a cheaper mp3 player last year.... so much better than this nano!!!!!

can someone please help me fiugre this thing out. when i first plugged it in, it worked for about 2 minutes, then eveything just disappeared.

I have the solution!:
1. Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (google
it) and install.
2. Connect iPod to USB and set the iPod in Disk Mode
(details are on website)
3. Run HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and format to
FAT32.
4. Run iPod Updater 2006-03-23 and select restore.
5. Run iTunes and copy music

Enjoy!!!!!

Hi Gallipod,

I got my Nano a couple of months back, It was running fine till around 15-20 days back and I did not do any update or anything. For my surprise, one day when I connected it to computer, it was not recognized I am getting this error

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

I have tried performing the steps that you suggested but as my i-pod is not recognized as USB device therefore HP format tool is also unable to format the device.

Can you please suggest anything to solve the issue.

Thanks in advance.

You are a lifesaver! I had the same problems as everyone else did and your step by step instructions worked. I have been working for the past 3 days on getting my nano recognized by my laptop. I updated with 03-23-06 and my nano had an exclamation point and folder on it. The screen went dark (no color) and it said "do not disconnect". I looked in My Computer and it showed up as removable storage device. It would not appear in itunes and in preferences it said no iPod connected. I put nano in disk mode, deleted iPodservice.exe in task manager, and reformatted it to FAT32. I didn't even use the HP USB formatting tool. Previously, the Update application was grayed out but it worked after I formatted my nano. I ran my software that came with my nano (01-10-06) and I am listening to my beloved tunes as I am writing this. Good Luck to everyone! Hope this helps (and is detailed enough).

Gailpod - I love you. It took 3 hours but I got my nano fixed.

Apple shame on you. My nano was screwed up by the newer version of updater 2006-06-28 so you have sent out a second updater that screws up people expensive MP3 players. I suggest you get somebody competant to come in and fix this clear inability to write functioning code.
