Cannot See Nano in Device Manager, ITunes or Ipod Updater

Help! I purchased a new Nano 3 weeks ago and I have been struggling with it ever since. I had it working very briefly, with some songs loaded. However, I then applied the lastest update (03-23) and my nano hasn't worked since. I've tried everything. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. The Nano does not show up in Windows Device Manager, and it does not show up in Itunes or in ipod Updater. In all the postings I've read with suggested solutions the nano was at least showing up SOMEWHERE. Mine doesn't show up in any of the three places. The songs I had loaded onto the Ipod disappeared, although they still show on my computer in ITunes. I have 2 USB 2.0 ports, and I've tried switching between those, but that still doesn't work. I am able to plug my Palm into either of the 2 ports and do a Hotsync, so I know the ports themselves do work. One post suggested putting the nano into disk mode before opening up the ipod updater. I have tried and tried to get my nano into disk mode and I can't get it to do that. The Apple logo comes up, I try to press Select and Play/Pause but it just comes up with the language selection list. I click on "English" and it brings up the regular menu. I do remember my computer restarting with the Nano still connected when I was working on this problem early on. Could that have damaged something or reset something? I've spent hours and hours over the past couple weeks on this problem and I'm truly stumped. Can anyone help? At this point I don't know what else to do except take it back to Best Buy. Thank you in advance to anyone who can advise.

i'm having this problem too. I bought it a few days ago and it was ok until i tried to update the software of the player. I tried resetting it but it just couldn't work. Now I have a problem, the ipod updater couldn't even detect my nano. How am I going to restore it to the default setting? I plugged my nano into 3 different computers with iTunes installed but it just couldn't work. My friend's iPod shuffle worked perfectly well on these computers. Any other solution?

To restore to factory settings I have to run ipod updater, right? I can't get ipod updater to recognize that I have my nano plugged into the USB port on my computer. Unless I'm missing something I can't restore to factory settings.

Today I did find a way to get my computer to recognize my nano, at least briefly. I plugged it into the first port of my USB 2.0 pair and left the second port empty, then rebooted with nano attached. Unbelievably I finally got a "Found new Hardward Apple iPod USB Device" message. The little removable storage icon showed up on the far right of the Start task bar. If I click on it it says "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - Drive (F:)". However that's as far as I've gotten it to work. My nano just flashes "Do Not Disconnect." If I try clickly to "safely remove the USB Mass Storage Device" I get a message back that says "The device 'Apple iPod USB Device' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." My nano has been flashing "Do Not Disconnect" for approximately 9 hours now, and it was fully charged (via wall plug) before I started. To me this had to be a false message, and I couldn't hear the disk, so I finally unplugged it anyway and got the Delayed Write error message others have posted about.

All I can say is this is an awfully expensive gizmo for something that doesn't work. I spent $250 + accessories + warranty (obviously well over $300) and it worked for three days. I do have the warranty, so I can probably take it back to Best Buy and get a replacement, but I honestly don't think that will make any difference.

I have the solution!:
1. Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (google it) and install.
2. Connect iPod to USB and set the iPod in Disk Mode (details are on website)
3. Run HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and format to FAT32.
4. Run iPod Updater 2006-03-23 and select restore.
5. Run iTunes and copy music

I tried googling for HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and found a page apparently on the HP web site that describes this tool, but when I click on the link to download the tool I get a bad address error. I tried searching the HP site for the tool without success. Any suggestions GailPod? Do you have a working link for the tool you recommended?

Also, I thought my PC was completely current on software. I'm set to receive automatic updates from Microsoft. However I checked the Microsoft site this morning and discovered that while there weren't any High Priority updates that I didn't have, there were 7 optional software updates available that I had not yet installed. I installed those this morning and that has changed the symptoms of my problem.

Prior to installing the updates my computer was not recognizing my nano unless I rebooted with the nano attached. If I did that then I got the "Found New Hardware Apple ipod USB Device" message and the little removable storage icon appeared to the far right of the Start taskbar.

After installing the updates this morning my computer does not recognize my nano at all. Even if I reboot with the nano attached I no longer get the "Found New Hardware..." message and the little icon no longer appears. However, in Device Manager an "Unknown Device" now shows up in the USB list a few seconds after I plug in my nano. I've tried to update the driver for that device, and it says I have the most current driver. I checked c:\windows\inf (per someone else's posting) and I do have usbstor.inf. Based on the last update date it appears to be the original one from when we purchased our computer approximately 4 1/2 years ago.

I continue to be able to successfully plug other devices, such as my Palm, into my USB 2.0 ports. My Palm works fine in either of my two USB 2.0 ports.

Of the 7 updates I installed this morning, 2 were for XP, 2 were for Windows Media Player, 1 was for Windows Connect and 1 was .NET. I guess I'm wondering if the Windows Connect and/or Windows Media Player updates didn't result in the change I've seen today.

It seems like this problem has to be software related. I just wish Microsoft or Apple or both would figure it out. Anyone have any new suggestions?

Im basically experiencing the exact problem: after using it for a couple days AND THEN installing the updated sftwre the icon for the ipod it has disappeared from itunes. I can find it in my device mgr and it's "working properly" but that's the only place it shows up. I've restored it so I have no music on it now and since I cant see it in itunes I have no way to put music on it. Guess I should have left well enough alone. Ive tried some of the suggestions mentioned here, freed up space on my usb ports, changed to all 4 ports and retried. I also went to HP to retrieve that usb tool but I couldnt download it ie blank page. Only thing consistent is the yellow exclamation mark stating "windows-delayed write failed. windows was unnable ot save all the data for the file G;(my USB port). This error may be caused by...failure of hrdwre/network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere". Of course I also have the little flashlight searching for something, and that disappears too. I'm not a programmer but it seems to me there's about a million possibilities about what I may be doing wrong. All I want to do is fill up my nano with some good sounds, not spend hours on the computer learning all the intricacies of doing all kinds of stuff with it. And like others here I'm frustrated and angry that apple would not fix something like this b4 selling it. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing from you.... Thanx tom

I have experienced the same problem over the last few days ...essentially the ipod nano was recognised by itunes but when I ran the 3-23 updater programme (which itunes asked you to do ) the nano was not recognised. I took the nano back to the shop and they could not get it to work - I felt is was a faulty device so they checked the problem and replaced it... guess what - when I went home all work ok for 5 mins then itunes asked me to update the ipod software using 3-23, - i clicked yes and now its the same problem again - this nano does not work. Hence its got to be a problem with the updater software..some form of bug?. Like the previous writers I have no way of restoring the nano even when put into manual disk mode as the Nano will not be recognised by the updater software. Apple - please help!

Hi Just worked it out (for me)
I had the same problem after loading the 3-23 updater than caused everything not to work...and I've been at the PC for hours.....Delete all the itunes from your PC and the updater program - you must get rid of the 3-23 updater - that's what caused my problem. Then install using the disk supplied (I used 1-10 as the updater)so that the itunes and ipod software are on the PC. Put the Nano in disk mode - do this manually - move the hold button on and off the press menu and the centre select button at the same time, after 6 seconds the Apple logo will appear - then hold down the select and play buttons at the same time - the nano should flip to disk mode. Restart the computer. Run 1-10 updater.....connect the nano to the computer(still in disk mode) and leave connected for about 1 hour. At first it looks like nothing happened but after 1 hour the updater programme then recognised the nano and I was able to restore the nano and remove the 3-23 updater that I believe caused the nano not to be recognised.
Good Luck!
