my iphone was sent from the uk by a family friend.

iPhone support, in South Africa, is provided by the authorized carriers, not Apple. Since you didn't purchase your phone in South Africa, none of the authorized carriers will help you. Your warranty/support is only valid/available in the UK, where your phone was purchased.

Always been like this with the iPhone. Except for the EU, where warranty/support is EU wide, iPhone warranty/support is limied to country of original purchase. This is especially true in countries where such is provided by the carriers, not Apple. They simply won't touch a phone they didn't sell. It is what it is & has always been this way.
