settings for port forwarding IP cameras

I am trying to configure Airport Extreme to set them up for Port Forwarding. As I have found many times, the directions are set up for routers on PC's, not on Macs... I have accessed Port Forwarding before for other cameras, and tried to do it the same way as before, but when I click on UPDATE to update the Airport Express, and then check on the settings I made for the camera, the settings are missing...I am not sure if there is one set of Port numbers I should be using but am not... Also, on the very first heading of a port forwarding window, there are apparently several default set ups, Remote access, Mail etc.. but none for IP cameras.. wondering if there is one set up I should use in this heading. Thanks for any help or advice....

Thanks for the information but even after reading it I still have some questions I was hoping you might be able to answer... the program that came with the camera found the IP address for the camera but lists a web address for my LAN, not a WAN...ie http://10.0.1.34/ how do I either find out what IP address the DHCP gave the camera, if it did, or assign one to the camera so that its accessible from outside my LAN? like an IP address of 198. etc...

Below are the instructions that came with the camera that I seem to be stuck on... in case it helps..

2. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) Mode

a. Use a small round stick (like a toothpick) to press and hold the RESET button

for four seconds.

b. Within 60 seconds of releasing the Reset button, press your router’s WPS

button. The WPS button is usually located on the router’s back or side. On some

routers, you may need to log into the web interface to activate the WPS feature.

Refer to your router’s User Manual if you’re unsure of how to activate WPS.

The camera will automatically create a secure wireless connection to your router.

If you have plugged in the network cable, unplug it. While connecting, the green

network light will blink quickly and the wireless settings will take effect. The IP

Camera Tool will search the camera’s LAN IP. Make sure the PC and the camera

share the same subnet.

You're asking the wrong person. I know nothing about connecting cameras like this. Normally, when you set up port forwarding all you need to know is the private address from which you are forwarding and the public address to which you are forwarding. But I don't know anything about the cameras.


You should try contacting the camera manufacturer's tech support. I'm sure they could help you out.

The 10.0.1.34 IP address is the one assigned by the DHCP server in your AirPort Extreme router.

Typically, you will want to assign a static Private IP address for your IP camera. You can then port map to this static address when attempting to access the camera from the Internet. In this case you will want to use the DHCP Reservations feature that is located on the DHCP tab within the AirPort Utility.


Accessing the camera from the Internet would require the public WAN-side IP address of your router. This address is provided to you from your ISP. So for example, if your camera is accessable from a web browser, you would enter http://<your WAN-side IP address>:80 in the browser when you are at a remote location.

That was very helpful but again, I have a couple of questions you seemed qualified to answer... once I do it one time correctly I should be able to do this again for the other camera.. my question is that in the tab for reserving the addresses, I see there is a tab for the area of 198. so so.. if I select this and put in an IP address, this won't mess up any of the other settings on my Airport Extreme such as my wireless laptop etc, will it???

Unless you have a need to use a different network subnet, any additional cameras should be assigned a static IP address using the DHCP Reservations feature in the same subnet range. So for example, if you assign one camera 10.0.1.34, you can use 10.0.1.35 for the second, 10.0.1.36 for the third, etc.


If on the other hand, you want to assign all of your cameras in the 192.168.n.n range, you would need to reconfigure your AirPort to use this range for DHCP. The key is that all cameras should be in the same subnet range as any of the computers on your local network. Does this make sense?

Thank you all for your suggestions, and I am working through them as time permits during the holiday season but I have one more fly to add to the mix... when I have gone into Port Forwarding and set up the Public and Private ports and the IP address.. it seemed to work okay BUT!!!! Then I would click on Save ( to save these settings--> then UPDATE to update the router. Then when I opened the same Port Forwarding Pane, I discovered NONE of the new settings were saved.... I was still able to access the camera using WifFi but not able to access it via the internet once I was outside WF... I have tried this several times with the same result, it won't save any new settings...at first I thought maybe I had done some type of illegal settings which Airport wouldn't save, but when I purposely tried to put in incorrect settings, I got a RED arrow at the line where the illegal instruction was... so I never could get to Save or Update when I did that... Does it sound to anyone that maybe the Airport is defective or does anyone have a different explanation? Thanks for your support!! Happy Holidays too...

Thanks for your help and the "fog" is starting to clear a bit .. however, even when I assign a IP address in the Port forwarding pane of Airport Extreme, it won't save it even after I click on SAVE and Then click on UPDATE .. when I open the settings again for that camera, the port forwarding IP addresss is gone.. would this suggest that my Airport Extreme is defective or am I defective?? LOL sorry for all the questions, but I do this so infrequently by the time I get back to adding a camera, I have forgotten what I did the last time ( typically a year later) .. thanks
