i have recently baught a new battery for my white macbook 13'' but when i put the battery in and turn it on it works fine but at the top where the battery icon is there is a 'x' in it and it says in the drop down menu no batteries avaliable what can i do?

The procedure is recommended when, among other problems:
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
George, try resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
