iPhone 5 display only shows white lines

My iPhone 5 only shows white lines on the screen. I'm unable to restart or anything because that is all that appears on the screen. I had read that it may be a loose connection, but all the connections seem fine. User uploaded fileWhat could be causing this?

Hardware failure.

Why does it look like something is broken on the left side?

Yes, I know. I was just hoping that it would be a loose connection because I had seen elsewhere that white blocks at the top of the screen meant a loose connection. This started as that and then went to full black screen with the white bars and blocks. How does Apple know I opened the phone though? Is there some tell-tale sign?
