iphoto freeze for 5-10 min. @ startup

Help! I updated to iphoto11 a month or two ago and now when I start iphoto it loads but is unresponsive for 5-10 minutes... afterwhich all if fine. I quit and restart iphoto and the same thing all over again. the activity monitor shows maybe 10%cpu use for iphoto during this startup time... there are no messages or alerts as to anything happening. Help please!

OK... finally got time to do this... xfered over 10,000 photo's and some 300 vid's. and there were two pictures that were not importable -uncrecognized format (jpg's) so maybe they were messing things up???

The new iphoto is working well... but what is missing is my notes on photo's. I used the comment or notes feature to put in keywords for smart folders and I see ratings didn't get carried over... again I use ratings extensively.

so....

do you think those two unrecognized pics were the problem... maybe I can go and delete them in the original iphoto library and make things work again for that... or is there a way to bring back my notes and ratings to the new libray?

Ye Ha!! That did it... I navigated to these bad pics in my original iphoto library... one of the bad files was a movie clip and the other a jpg... they would not open in their respective app's so yes the files were bad...I just deleted the bad movie and I replaced the bad jpg one with a good one. Started it up and iphoto wanted to repair database, it did, and now it's opening correctly and no delays...

So doing the copy of master folders into a new iphoto file detected the bad files... I got rid of the bad files and that fixed the problem and I get to keep all my ratings and comments. Thanks Toad, for the help!

One last thing... I may have found an additional causal factor for the iphoto freeze... I don't use iphoto too much so I just opened it to load the last couple months of photo's from my iphone... and it was freezing again. I realized that iphoto was continuously accessing the external hard drive (used for time machine)... I force quit iphoto, ejected the external and voila iphoto started good again. On the external was a folder with 1,000 photo's that I didn't need to/want to put into iphoto... like 880meg worth. so i guess iphoto was trying to get all these photo's loaded for importing?? but it didn't say so- it just sat there opened but frozen...

Is there a way to tell iphoto to ignore the external hard drive, like we can do with spotlight?? If not, I'll have to eject the external before starting iphoto
