Keyboard update killed the PhotoBooth "fix" for whine

I was using the PhotoBooth "fix" to kill the horrible whine, whereas I would launch Photo Booth, click on a thumbnail and then quit the application and the whine was gone. Well, after installing the keyboard update 1.0 released today, quitting PhotoBooth means the whine is back...

yep, this keyboard update killed "buzzkiller" (a little app that opened and closed photobooth on login making it very easy to silence the whine). Even worse, my whine has gotten more noticeable on AC power! Now the only way to get rid of the whine is Quite MBp--thank goodness that still works even if it does consume power. This whole thing pizzes me off! Seriously, it is getting to the point where I don't want to run any updates at all. Every update, new problems. The last one causes my photobooth to flicker when I start it up. They should dedicate a branch at Apple with engineers who update thes friggin updates. They might even need 3 tiers--the updaters that fix the problems not fixed by the updaters that fixed the update. This is hogwash!

How would I know what it was supposed to fix. The very fact that it is supposed to be an "update" speaks to the idea that it is supposed to make things work better. I read the update summary and it just said that it fixed some responsiveness issues. We should lobby for a warning to be attached to all these updates, how about--"WARNING: This update is supposed to fix random errors that engineers deemed important enough to work on. In working on these updates our knowledgeable engineers may have certainly created more problems than they have solved--but then, you're the sorry sap who insisted on being on the bleeding edge to begin with--so suck it up princess, if errors are created, and they most certainly will be, wait for some future update to possibly address it.

One thing is for certain, my sticky 'H" key is still sticky.

I don't know why they were so accomodating. I made an appointment online that morning, walked in, and told the genius, "I have the whine, the moo, and it's burning lava hot. I installed all the firmware updates, repaired permissions, reset PRAM and PMU, and nothing worked." I didn't describe these problems to them, but instead acted like I knew that they knew about these issues. I'm not sure if that really helped or not.

He seemed to recognize that I knew what I was talking about, and took it in the back room to have a listen for himself. I also told him that 1) I made a recording of myself playing the guitar in Garageband, and the whine ruined the recording and 2) When I try to play movies on a television, the sound comes through the TV speakers.

I think he would have sent it in without anything I said in the second paragraph, but I told him just to drive the point home. I was ready to demand a fix, but lucked out on a friendly genius, I guess.

good to know, but it also sounds like you had your points of concern laid out before you went into the store. I made a genius apt. as well and was told the whine was standard. I also took my MBP to a local, authorized, repair center and they ended up replacing the logic board for me, but the whine actually seems louder than before? Of course the LB was the only thing they replaced and I think everything else should have been replaced as well.

I am going to hang out for a few more months and see if something comes out for a fix, otherwise, I will call, or take mine to a store and insist that they take another look.

Glad to hear things worked out for you though. What week is your MBP?

Mine is a week 9. After using it for a few hours and giving it a few heavy loads, I still haven't heard any mooing. The processor makes a different kind of (much quieter whine) now. If I bought the machine in its current condition and hadn't heard anything about the whine, I would probably not even have noticed it.

It is important to have your points laid out for you when you go to the store. I think the most important point would be that if they sell you Garageband with the computer, it doesn't matter if the whine is within spec. Any recordings made with the internal mic (such as podcasts, ichats, or music demos) are unusable and sound terrible. The whine ruins Garageband recordings. I think if the manufacturer's hardware doesn't work with the manufacturer's hardware, you have solid ground to stand on when demanding service/exchange.

As a side note, my whine is still perceptible in Garageband using the internal mic, though mirror widget (while running) still kills it temporarily. I think if I'm going to be recording, I'll probably not be trying to conserve power anyway, so it works for me, for the time being. I haven't tried hooking up to television yet.
