Spell check quick working

I have settings set to check spelling while typing in the mail preferences and also when i go into edit, Spelling, check spelling now, it still won't work. No red underline, no right click with other options for a word that I know is misspelled. Otherwise mail is working fine. OS 10.6.8 and Mail 4.6

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

So I don't know if it worked to just reply in the email notice I get when you answer. It hasn't shown up here. Anyway, I just wanted to ask if you knew if there is a way to re-install or update graphic card drivers. Adobe seems to think that is the issue with problems of Photoshop displaying their windows correctly. I looked on apple and don't see where you can do that. My graphic card is supposed to be compatible with Photoshop CS6

I did the shut down and hold those keys and it didnt change the spell check not working. I will try it again just to make sure

I see that it did work, just didn't see page 2! duh

So I did the text edit thing, that was set right

shut down twice again and did the opt, control, shift with the power button, twice,

still not fixed. this is really frustrating. I'm not so worried about the mail though I would really like it to work properly, but I have to have Photoshop working properly.

Thanks,

Try to do a safe boot: Power off, power back on holding the shift key, continue to hold the shift key till you see the progress bar, then you can release it. after it boots and you can login, open mail, new message, put your address in the address bar (we are not sending this it only a test) Try writing some things in the text field, spell some things wrong and see if it underlines in red. Let me know what happens, if it works ok that means it is some 3rd party software causing this. SJP

Ok, did that, too, didn't workk either. Is there any other software that shares the spelling function with Mail so that I can check to see if it has disappeared or gotten corrupted? Or was that the Safari check? And is there any way to check the Safari further to make sure that when it looks right, it's actually working? And is it shared with the mail?

I just checked the Text Edit program again, and it is not checking spelling either.

sounds to me like it is the OS system, make sense?

I just checked in inDesign, and while I can get it to manually check the spelling, where it's always indicated in one of the views if there was something misspelled or not capitalized, it doesn't show up now in that view. But unlike the text edit, it finds the items when I manually go to the menu and choose the check spelling.

this is really bizarre

Kathy, You can try safari, I might have mentioned that before, but I can't remember ,so it did not work in safe boot. That really starts to make me think that there is an OS issue, as safe boot disables all 3rd party software, and only allows native software to run. We use it for diagnostics to help find issues. There are a couple of more things that I would like to try before I give you a suggestion. Also does your Adobe function? Are there issues with any of your other software? You can let me know on the next communiqué. You can also try Word and/or Pages. Purposely spell some words wrong not so wrong that it could never figure them out, but a letter or 2. Try the following in all the applications mentioned in this post: Finish typing, just a few lines in each application, one application at a time then close that application, and try a new one. In each one after you (don't forget a misspelling) go to edit>spelling and grammar and click show spelling and grammar from the sub menu, or check document now, see if it finds the misspelled word and try to correct (replace)it then click find next and see if it will go thru the whole doc and fix it. Get back to me and we will try one more diagnostic test, ( I'm running out, as we've done all but this one coming up ;)after i hear back from you on the results of the tests on this page. Thank you for patience, as this has been one of the most bizarre issues I've come across. SJP

Hi SJP,

I don't really have a lot of programs to type in, don't have word. Spelling is working fine in inDesign, it is not working in textEdit, and it is not working in OpenOffice.org. I notice in the preferences in Openoffice that when you choose the edit options, it states that the spell check is Mac OS spelling check. And it's not working. tried it directly and it also didn't work.

SO it's really sounding to me like an OS issue.

Thanks again for all your attention to my problem. Is there any way to go to apple and download just the spelling part for the OS I'm using? Would it just make sense to upgrade to the 10.7.5 and see if that fixes it?

Kathy, Yes it is starting to sound that way to me as well. I have one more thing I would like you to try, get back to me after and let me know what happens. If it goes not how we would like I'll give you instructions on how to get this fixed, other than the online posts. reset pram: Power off, power back up holding the following keys option, command,P,R (no commas) hold these keys immediately after pressing the power button before the start chime rings. Continue to hold them till you hear the start chime 3 times, then release. (We usually let it ring twice, but I want really flush the system. Reboot and try things out. Then get back to me and we'll get this bugger to fixit land. SJP
