right now there's a telus simcard in it. Telus uses the same network etc as Bell. According to III Bell does only have CDMA, so Telus has only CDMA too.

Right now it says:

There is a problem with your iPhone.

That's probably because I haven't finished the initial set up yet, because there's no correct sim card in the phone.

The wireless/cell phone provider available in your area may depend on who has a license in the province where you live.

The following is a list of the largest mobile carriers in Canada:

Bell Mobility: Ontario & Quebec (CDMA)

Rogers / Fido-Microcell: Ontario & Quebec (GSM)

Telus Mobility: Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec (CDMA)

Virgin Mobile: Ontario (CDMA-PCS)

Sprint Canada: Ontario, Quebec (GSM or CDMA depending on the region)

Aliant: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland & Labrador (CDMA)

SaskTel: Saskatchewan (CDMA)

Mobile phones from abroad

If you come from Europe and want to keep your phone in Canada, you may need to go with the only GSM operators in the country, but still need to verify the following:

The frequency of your phone

Whether or not your phone is unlocked to receive a new SIM card.

Bell and Telus used to be CDMA only but they both added GSM 3G to their networks a few years ago. They do not use CDMA with iPhones. Both Bell and Telus sell the A1428 iPhone 5 (GSM only). The A1429 should work (except for LTE) with any Canadian SIM if the phone is unlocked.

Are you currently in Canada? You may not be able to activate with a Canadian SIM if you are not in an area covered by the SIM's carrier.
