What is it talking apple so long to create an update for the whine issue?

I think it is pretty ridiculous that the only update apple has released that effects the whine issue, only makes it worse. Even worse is that users over here have managed to detect and resolve the issue before apple has managed to do so. So come on apple, what's taking so long? It's amazing how badly this situation is being handled.

Yea, sometimes I feel Tiger just feels "patched" to the intel platform. I have a feeling when Leopard rolls around its design will be emphasized for the intel hardware and hopefully things won't have that feeling any longer. I still believe though that these MBP's are fast and am generally happy. The whine issue is sad though. If XP can do speedsteep, OS X should be able to. After all, this could be the reason it runs too warm as well. It should be addressed.

I can see why they addressed the Photobooth/Mirror widget thing. Since the whine is "in spec," opening the mirror widget/photobooth would increase power draw on the processor, kill the whine, but also reduce battery life and make the notebook warm up. They fixed that.

It kinda *****, but blah. I'm lucky that I'm never in a completely silent environment I guess.

There have been exactly zero posts from Apple telling us that they’re working on this problem. Several people have reported that they were told by Apple representatives that the symptom was not outside any specification (true enough) and thus not something they’re obligated to fix.

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for a fix. Unless it inteferes with your hearing sufficiently to block the sound that upsets you so.

JJK, there are some very knowledgeable (geeky) members on this forum, and they did figure out a few workarounds; (some very creative and elaborate), but not definitive fixes.

Apple is aware of the problem and will work on it in a way proportionate to the claims they are having with this issue. My guess is that they are not having enough claims to consider it a high priority issue. Most users don't even notice the whine unless they read about it. (me).

But when Apple comes out with something it will have to be a "fix", not a workaround. And as I see it there is no fix without compromises at the moment.

Apple can only screw their customers so much. They need to lower costs to be competitive and they walk on thin ice. But Mac's customers have a high level of exigency; so at the end apple will have to come up with something good. They know their trade very well and they reached what they reached making good stuff.

I trust Apple. The day they start to feed us junk food they'll lose at least one customer. Me.

I personally don't think we have enough consumers complaining to Apple in regard to the whine issue for Apple to acknowledge the matter. My guess is that the users on this forum is only accounted for 5-10% of total MBP been sold on the market. While the rest of the 90% consumers probably do not even realize there is a whine issue (assuming it's just normal fan noise). So, how many actually have return/exchange MBP due to the whine issue? Probably less than 5% (maybe as little as 2-3%) including the users on this forum. Not to mention, many users on this forum acknowledge the whine problem, but still kept the MBP and mouth closed because the computer is just what they expected (fast, sleek, XP dual boot, etc...) and most importantly, there are work-arounds for the whine. Once the work-around are applied, it'll make everything perfect!

I "personally" think until the day Appel realize their return/exchanges/repairs costs are exceeding their expectation DUE to the whine noise, I don't think Apple will do anything about it...or at least not as a priority. (IMO, Apple's #1 priority = introducing new products out on the market)

I found Apple to be pretty responsive to my situation. I took my MBP (originally a W8610... SN) to the local Apple Store, had a Genius confirm that my CPU whine issue was (a) not the inverter whine and (b) definitely not something the laptop should be doing. He created a case for me to call it a DOA machine, since I had only had it less than a week at that point. Later I augmented the ticket through phone support because I had overheating issues. Disk temps were running over 120 F, which is too hot for a disk to be operating at.

They replaced it, and now I have a new W8617... SN machine, which is whine-free (so far) and a cool cucumber.

I'm posting from the Apple Store where I'm getting another copy of iWork '06 because the DVD I got with the replacement Mac was bad. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the outcome.

Since this hardware is whine free, and others have whine free hardware, I'm not sure I see it as a software only issue that can be patched by just modding the software. It seems it's also hardware related.

Not true; I noticed right away w/o reading about it.

Also Apple hasn't said anything about it, so claiming they'll fix it, and is
"aware of the problem" seems like going out on a limb. I hope they do fix it, but haven't seen anything in writing on that as of yet.

I went in to the apple store by me the other night and asked about the whine, i wanted to hear it before buying, the associate told me that there is no such thing it just the processor running and that any dual core will make the same sounds. So i said there are many MBP owners who dont have the whine and he said i didnt know what i was talking about basicly. Im younger than the guy and i prolly know more about computers than he does.
