Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Are you experiencing kernel panics?

I have been experencing kernel panics on a regular basis for the past few weeks. I have rebuilt my directory often, re-installed OS X 10.8.2 and fixed permissions but all of a sudden my computer freezes up completely. I am not a novice at this but I am at a loss as to what is causing these kernel panics.

Does anyone have suggestions?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 with 8 GB 13

Your system is so heavily modified that, instead of trying to remove the modifications piecemeal, you should erase your boot volume, reinstall OS X, and then go through the initial setup process, importing only your user data and settings from backup — not applications or other files.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with a mirroring tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Preferably both. You must be certain that you can restore everything to the state it's in now.

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume with the default options. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you import the data from one of your backups. For details, see here:

Setting up a new Mac from an old one

Import only "Users" and "Settings" – not "Applications" or "Other files." Don't import the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system. After that, run Software Update. If you still have the problem, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service provider for hardware testing.

If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall your third-party software selectively. I can only give general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.

Before installing any software, ask yourself the question, "Am I sure I know how to uninstall it without having to start this process all over again?" If the answer is "no," stop.

Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.

Never reinstall such useless crapware as "Drive Genius," "TechTool," "VirusBarrier," "SIMBL," or "Rapport." If you install such things, your computer will not work. Install only software that directly enables you to carry out the tasks you use the computer for.

MR Davis,

Thank you for you advise but it seems very drastic. I have been a Mac OS customer since 1984+. I remember having extension problems and fixing them with approirate software such as disk doctor. I have kept up with the OS & software that might be benificial to keeping the Os running smoothly. I understood that Mac OS X was suppose to not need extension software fixes. However that is the problem I might have & your solution is to is to do a clean install. I am a bit disturbed that you categorize "TechTool," "VirusBarrier," "SIMBL," or "Rapport." as crapware!

I had a great deal of trust in your suggestions but I now feel uneasy to do as suggested.

Thank you for your time on this problem.

Jan 3, 2013 12:56 PM in response to pemuise

Mr. Davis is essentially correct. You have a LOT of additions to your system, many of them, shall I say ... problematic. Taken individually they may (likely will) cause a problem, but collectively - a bag of hurt. I would prudently follow the sage advice given and reinstall a clean system and then install, over a period of time, only really necessary additions. That way, you may be able to isolate a problem child. I certainly would not reinstall "VirusBarrier''. "SIMBL" also has caused problems for me in the past, so I found alternatives. My $0.02.

So why are you using them? You appear to seeking a record for the number of system hacks.

Uninstall Intego: http://support2.intego.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=214

Uninstall Rapport: http://www.trusteer.com/support/uninstalling-rapport-mac-os-x

Uninstall Drive Genius: http://www.prosofteng.com/docs/DriveGenius3UsersGuide.pdf See page 66.

All of these are 100% useless and have succeeded only in wasting your time and money.

SIMBL: "SIMBL (SIMple Bundle Loader) - pronounced like "symbol" or "cymbal" - enables hacks and plugins."

QED

... I now feel uneasy to do as suggested.

Feeling is what caused these problems to begin with.

Enjoy your Mac.

Sophos AV is the problem. Was causing kernel panics for me beginning abruptly around mid January 2013; removed it, all is well. Also spoke with Sophos support on the issue.

Use the Sophos Uninstaller which should be on your system after you installed SophosAV. If not, you can re-download SophosAV, install it, the Uninstaller will then be present, and then you can run the Uninstaller.

ClamAV can be used as a substitute. Not sure if it's installed with Mountain Lion, but it is part of the Server Versions of most versions of OSX. In any case you can just download and install it.

Are you experiencing kernel panics?
