2012 Mac mini-adding second SSD drive?

Has anyone added a second drive to their Mac mini? I saw the procedure on OWC today and it looks pretty involved. however, adding a second SSD drive is very tempting. 🙂

You can set it up that way. Some feel it is better to have two separate drives so that if one fails the other is still OK. With Fusion if one fails you lose your data because they are joined at the hip. The speed may be better on the stand alone SSD because it is not writting to HD. As an example you could use the HD as a time machine backup drive for your SSD if your SSD is large enough for your speciifc use. I like having having a large SSD and an external HD for TM backups but that's just me.

Questions:

1> What is the largest SSD drive (required specs would be appreciated) that you can install in a late 2012 mac mini next to the 1 TB internal HD.

2> I already have tons of programs and files running on the internal HD, I don't want to lose anything adding that SSD. Advice?

3> Fusion or standalone 2 drives? Speed is my primary goal here cause I believe that mac mini with just internal HD in unusable. I can't even run Apple mail program normally.

Thanks a lot for help in advance.
