Metronome Click for 6/8 Time Signature

Forgive me if this is a really basic question, but how do you get the metronome to click only twice per bar for a 6/8 time signature? I'm writing a piece in a quick 6/8 and I don't want 6 ridiculously fast clicks per bar while I'm recording. I searched the discussion forums but didn't see any answers. Thanks!

that'll work for only a very specific situation.

if you have written a piece in 6/8 and plan to record it, setting it to 2/4 will not give you the correct length of beat. the beat should fall on every 3rd quaver subdivision, but setting it to 2/4 will have it landing on every 2nd thereby making your tempo 33% faster.

sure, you could change the tempo, but that would start making things dangerously fiddly. you would have to smpte lock all regions and automation data just to record, and then it could get awkward with any tempo changes you have in there and any time signature changes you might have in there as well.

if you have a piece in 6/8 you should record it in 6/8 without having to resort to something as drastic as changing the tempo and the time signature just to get a metronome beat right. logic ought to be able to do a dotted value beat, but as it can't, we will have to write them for the klopfgeist AI.

This should be on the "short list" for the next update. Digital Performer allows you to choose dotted values for tempo and meter settings. There is no reason that Logic shouldn't have this capability. Especially with the new DP 5, there are some amazing new Click and Count-off features, especially for film scoring.

Having said that, you can do many of the same things in Logic (manually) by using the Klopfgeist instrument plug-in. Overall, an annoyance, but not a deal-breaker by any means.

Can you expound on this a bit please?

Sure I could, but it's easier to let MOTU do the talking for me. Here's the link that will take you specifically to the new click and count-off features in DP 5.

I'm still thinking that I will end up working in LP 7.2, but DP has really got the tempo/meter/click/count-off options working well. Apple needs to take a look at DP and steal these functions. But don't get rid of the awesome tempo curves in the Global Tempo track! To me, that is the most musical way to do tempo changes, compared to DP and Pro Tools.
