Why is video playback continually stuttering after the Mountain Lion 10.8.2 update?

Since updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 video playback in iTunes and QuickTime is unwatchable. The video stutters constantly then plays catch up to the sound. I'm running a 2011 Mac Mini i5 2.3 GHz and 8 Gb of RAM. Anyone know how to roll back the update to a working version of Mountain Lion?

Hello, you'd have to reinstall 10.8.0 or 10.8.1, but...

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?

How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I had this problem with a mid 2012 MacBook Pro 2.9GHz and 8GB RAM.

I even had this problem following a clean install of Mountain Lion and with no Apps installed.

Solution for me was to sign out of iCloud - even just unticking the Safari option in iCloud fixed it - sign back in and the problem returns.

I believe that this is a Mountain Lion problem that may be linked to graphics drivers - I expect that this will be fixed with the 10.8.3 update - along with the sound stuttering problem.

BTW my internet connection is not the problem re iCloud, I'm on fibre with actual dl of 40mb/s and ul of 6mb/s.

I have no SMART errors. There's no issues with the CPU, RAM or disk usage.

Console has thousands of system log files generated in the lt few hours, though I have no idea what they are supposd to be telling me. I've got 4000 'All Messages' generated in a few hours. Relating to Quicktime I have:

06/01/2013 19:56:49.932 QuickTime Player[1923]: It does not make sense to draw an image when [NSGraphicsContext currentContext] is nil. This is a programming error. Break on void _NSWarnForDrawingImageWithNoCurrentContext() to debug. This will be logged only once. This may break in the future.

In activity monitor System Memory I have 'Page outs: 8.05Gb (0 byyes/sec).

Today I have done a system restore from last April, reinstalled Mountain Lion, and nothing is any better. In fact the whole system is slow, dim witted, shows a spinning beachball continually, and the keyboard is intermittently unresponsive. It's worse than running Windows Vista for crying out loud.

Ouch, but I think you found the problem.

Is QT Player running?

What are some of the other errors?

What is the ouch? The Quicktime error or the page outs?

I think there is something wrong with my disk as it struggles with video, games, and to a lesser degree on line videos such as Youtube. When playing video or games from an external drive there is not problem.

I have no SMART errors whilst in safe mode I've run verify/repair disk and and disk permissions, and it reports all is OK.

I've downloaded from the App store Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, and I barely get 60MB/s on a disk read or write, which according to the utility is bareley enough to watch PAL TV.

Whatever has happend to my disk speed, it was a sudden change; one day I was able to watch 1080p video, and the next I could not.

Any ideas?

Thanks
