My mac book has just frozen, crashed and now only opens in Utilities

You could try that, but it'll only work if that DVD is mounted, which might not be the case in recovery mode.

Thanks baltwo, in fact it did not work from the Install DVD.

Can you explain what the 0 operand does in chflags?

AFAIK, it removes all flags. I copied it from VK's post at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2329689 and it always works to unlock locked volumes.
