Whatsapp suddenly stopped working on my iPhone 3G:

It first asked me to verify my cell#. After I did it, it tells me that they have sent me an SMS with code to the my cell#, and I should enter the 3 digit activation code. Since I never received the activation code, I chose to click on either 'Resend code' or 'Call me'.

Whichever I clicked on, it gives a response that my Application is of an older version.

When I then tried to update Whatsapp via Appstore, the message says that 'Update Required' : 'This app requires iOS 4.3'

After browsing through the internet, I found an answer that my 3G iPhone can not go any higher than 4.2.

Why should I change my old iPhone 3G, when Whatsapp was already working perfectly before on it ?

iPhone 3G, iOS 4.2

Right, sorry for constant post here.

Heres a 'update' 😝

Just gone on the updates on my app store and 23 updates required on 4.2.1.... Changed as above to 4.3 now 57 updates... So I'm saying Apple

Ok, I did what you said, and read what was on the forum.

What app did you use to edit the version setting?

And did it work? You can use whatsapp again?

ANSWER FROM WHATSSAPP:

Hi,

Thanks for your message.

In order to connect to WhatsApp, or activate your number, you will need the latest version of WhatsApp Messenger - v2.8.7 - available from the App Store on your iPhone. Please note that iPod and iPad are not supported devices.

The latest version of WhatsApp for iPhone requires iOS 4.3 or later. Regretfully, Apple does not allow new app updates to be compatible with both iOS 6 and older versions of iOS, effectively ending support for the iPhone 3G. Because of Apple's decision to stop supporting these devices, we can no longer provide new app updates for iPhone 3G users.

If you have an iPhone 3GS or newer device, please update to the latest version of iOS. Instructions for updating can be found at this Apple Support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972

WhatsApp is also supported on Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and select Nokia devices. Find out more at http://www.whatsapp.com/

***? What we (iphone3G users) have with that? We brought an APP lifetime! I cant accept that WA works on poor device like any BBerry and any Nokia, samsung ( all versions of android ) and doesnt work with an IPHONE3G. Common DEVs make another version of WA for Iphone3G instead. If is not possible a single version for all Iphone models, make a diferent ones. Thxs

Ask Whatsapp. THEY are the ones who killed off a system that worked perfectly well on the 3G. They are the ones who made the app and charged you for it. Apple is just the storefront in this case.

They did not write Whatsapp. They do not support Whatsapp. They do not run the service that Whatsapp uses.

No we are not missing the point; seems you are.

What if you loaded up Photoshop and it said sorry, you need to go out an buy a new Mac!

If it were a life and death situation for me re: Photoshop, I would most likely go out an buy a new Mac. Happens all the time with new software. Old hardware and software becomes obsolete.

Whatsapp should continue to support the old versions.

Maybe they should; it is not Apple's problem.

Am I going to get my money back?

Who knows; ask Whatsapp.

Of course, obsolete sure. But not possible to use it at all anymore? We all know that it's not hard to continue the service in this case.

It is becoming Apple's problem for sure. They should support their users in this case.

And especially now that users are considering not to buy new Apple hardware in the future because of this behaviour it is becoming Apple's problem.

So you are telling me there are NO apps you can currently run on the 3G, and that you cannot send email, browse the internet or make calls?

Seems to me you are overstating and obfuscating the situation.

Hi,

My iPhone 3G stopped working yesterday as well (in France)...

What I found really frustrating and could be qualified as BAD customer service is there was no notice to warn WhatsApp users with iPhone 3G that:

  1. They won't be able to use their service anymore (despite they paid for it - in my case)
  2. U don't have any possibility to backup your stuff now !

I don't understand how Apple and WhatsApp can cause situations like that!

Apple shouldn't push their developpers to provide a unique App or update for all iphone models, what would be the matter for a iPhone3G section in the AppStore? And WhatsApp should work sth out so older versions of the app are still compatible with the recent ones.

I really hope they'll try to overcome this issue. Of course I think many iPhone 3G owners have other solutions to text and send files. I could call my friends in California every day, but I chose WhatsApp on the AppStore because it's more convenient. And we all know it's still able to work properly, as it worked 2 days ago...😠

If anyone has a feedback from WhatsApp or Apple (would be interesting to hear from them, but they don't seem to pay attention to owners of 3 y-o phones, which is a pity since they are potentially customers in a shortening near future)...

To put it in a nutshell, this bad experience made me realize how the AppStore conditions can be restrictive, for developpers as well as customers, and leads me to strongly think about Android for my next phone (since my iPhone 3G seems to be programmed to be less and less useful).

I guess both Apple AND WhatsApp are to be blamed here...😟

The feedback from Whatsapp has been posted on this thread and others in this section.
