how do i update my ipod touch 4.2.1 to newer software?
iPod touch, iOS 4.2
You likely can't. The 2G iPod can ony go to iOS 4.2.1
iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318
Hi, I have just bought an Ipod on ebay and advertised as 3rd Generation, I have also discovered that this is a 2nd Generation, the info I have researched follows:-
Why can't I update my iPod touch to iOS 5?
Only the third-generation or fourth-generation iPod touch can run iOS 5. My guess is that you have a second-generation model for which iOS 4.2.1 is the last version available. You can confirm the model you have here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 Regards.

Buyers beware make sure you get the right model number or you will not be able to download most of the new games apps. as these need 4.3.1. and later software which can not be done ona 2nd Generation.
If you can access the iPod just go to Settings>General>About>Model.
You can also enter the SN here to find the model

Thanks to this thread, my questions are answered. Unfortunately, I wasted 2 hours and reset my Ipod to try and get the update to IOS5, only to find you can't. Nice.
And please tell me who can read the engraving on the back of an IPod without a super magnifying glass to see what version number they have ????
C'mon!

Unfortunately, all models of iDevices, laptops, MP3 players, computers, etc will eventually come to the point where the latest and greatest software will not be compatible.
Hence a world need for magnifying glasses.
