Life’s Change Agent and the iPhone 3G

Many people are asking why we’ve stopped supporting the iPhone 3G. It’s because Apple has stopped supporting old iOS versions and old iPhones in their most recent version 4.5 of Xcode, which is the tool (the only tool) that engineers use to make iPhone apps.

The iPhone 3G has a special place for me in my heart – it was the first smartphone I bought in January of 2009 and it was the first phone on which we started developing WhatsApp just a month later.

Then as now, however, we must follow Apple’s lead on all things related to the iPhone. Their pace of innovation has a price of forced obsolescence.

Call Apple and ask to speak to Tim Cook.

There is nothing that stops Whatsapp from using an older version of the SDK, others still do. But that leaves them without access to a number of APIs that have been introduced. Their choice. There are still a large number of apps that still are backward compatible to 4.0.

No, they do not as a general rule read this forum.

It isn't just Apple that has done this, even the very first smartphones have their own brief shelf life. Try running todays apps on the very first Android phones.

Sounds like a cop out to me. They can't figure out how to code it so that it works. Plenty of app developers have no problem making their apps work on old and new versions of iOS. They have chosen not to.

That said, the 3G is 4 1/2 years old. It's been discontinued for 2 1/2 years. Try running current Android apps on a 4 1/2 year old Android phone and let us know how far that gets you...

This conversation is pointless.

Sounds like a reasonable approach if you really want to use Whatsapp and don't want to get a new iPhone. Just make sure you buy something that is compatbile and you will be able to upgrade for several years. Or buy from a company that doesn't update often.

I would suggest one of the Microsoft Windows 8 phones.

Is this supposed to hurt us or something? I don't care if you never use a smartphone again. If you get an Android and Whatapp later updates and you can't you can post somewhere else and tell everyone you won't use ______ phone again. In the world of cell phones and small electronics 2 years is a lifetime.

This is a user-to-user technical support site. Apple is not here. Call them and tell them you will never use iPhone in the future.

I had an idea, but not sure if it will work. I unluckily downloaded a newer version of whatsapp and that version was installed in my computer (hence my iphone 3g now is not working). I thought, what if I find the older version (the one that was working before) and that one I reinstall in my computer and see what happen. Now I just have to find someone with an old version of whatsapp to send me the file to try it. Any idea if this might work?

honestly, whatsapps dev team should maintain the old version like other applications, like my case, i paid for the whatsapps now i can't used, this is not proffesional at all..i'm not sure whether is difficult to maintain the old version but this is workable in some FREE apps! Above article just make me feel they are not proffesional at all.
