Thanks so much for the help. I was looking on Amazon, and they had a similar model--but 12 lbs. may be more cumbersome than I want to travel with. I do have a large capacity SD card for my camera, but I will be there a month, take a lot of pics at high resolution, so would like a way to get them on Photostream for safety and to free up my card. I have the camera connector for the ipad, so for the photos I think I'll do a photostream upload when I can get to wifi. I still feel like I'll need the printer (we print out customs, shipping forms, etc. for shipping home), but lugging a 12 pounder may be worth it.

I appreciate the additional thought and help!

Well first things first! :-)

PhotoStream should never be thought of as an option for "Backingup"

It is strictly a mechanisim for "Sharing" photos, nothing more

There might be cheeper ways of putting together a Mobile Workflow that is not Computer dependent but I find this to be the most flexable and compleatly non Computer dependent yet allows transfer between iPad and Harddrive as well as Backing up ones SD cards

I have an SSD in mine so as to further protect aganist Harddrive Platter failure

Also getting more SD cards is the cheepest way to guard aganist loosing Data

I do not wipe my cards but keep them untill I have everything in triplicate, then we wipe the cards!

So travel with plenty of SD cards, get the HyperDrive as an on location Backup and you can also use it to store files from the iPad.

And as far as Printers that are portable this is limited but might work

Thanks, those are very useful and professional suggestions. You are absolutely right about PhotoStream, and another few SD cards would be a good investment. I guess the SSD is better than SD? I wonder if it is compatible with iPad's camera connector? I worry that going through airport security could wipe the cards--? The Hyperdrive will be on my wishlist--a tad pricey right now, but an excellent suggestion! I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge!

There is a cheeper version of the HyperDrive that you supply the HardDrive

SSD is a solid state HardDrive, no moving parts, less to break

Not a replacement for the SD Cards

But yes the more the SD Cards the better :-)

You can use the iPad to view them, you can also transfer some over to the iPad for sharing and Tweaking but I would not count the iPad as a Backup solution
