Connect Samsung Smart TV to Time Capsule

Hi

I'm using Time Capsule as my main home router. I have absolutely no problems connecting my Mac or either of the two iPhones in the house and has worked perfectly since I bought it.

I am now attmpting to connect a Samsung TV (UE40ES6300U) to that TC but without success. I can achieve the first of the two objecting and that is the TV connecting to the router but cannot complete the second objective which is making that connection with the internet.

I've spoken to my ISP three times, Samsung once and Apple once all without any of them taking responsibility.

I read something on a forum regarding the router mode being set in NAT mode stopping connections. My TC is set as 'DHCP and NAT'. If I change to 'DHCP only' I am then prompted to review my settings for static IP addresses. My ISP only uses dynamic addresses.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mac OS X (10.7.5)

The 3 I have are 'TimeCapsule', 'GuestNet' and 'TC5GHz'

TimeCapsule without a space is valid name..

You name wireless in the front page of the wireless section.. it is staring you in the face.

First option.. Wireless Mode..

Below the line.. Wireless Network Name..

User uploaded file

The wireless network name.. that will be copied from the TC name..

so tried 1, 6 and 11. Only 6 was detected by the TV but wouldn't go further than connecting to TC.

So it connected.. all you are missing is DNS then.. as I posted previously.. set dns in the TV along with the gateway if that is also missing. You are half way there.

How far away is the TV.. you might just not have enough signal.. or you have high interference.. do you have 2.4ghz cordless phone, or av senders or front door video or baby monitors.. all those things running 2.4ghz can mess up signal.. as well as all the 2.4ghz in the area.. particularly if you live in apartment.

The fact that it won't link on other channels tells me you are just stretching the distance beyond what the TV can handle.

Finally how do I test without security? Is it as simple as deleting the passwords?

No.. on that same screen above.. where it says wireless security.. click the side option handle.. select none.

Since you are having so much trouble.. I would either.. buy a cheap wireless router.. $30 tp-link or edimax and plug it into the TC.. and run it in WAP mode... and connect the TV using that. Run a long enough ethernet so the WAP is close to the TV.

Or if the TV has ethernet as well as wireless.. plug it straight in using EOP homeplug adapters or airport express as a wireless bridge. In a poor wireless environment.. ethernet or homeplug is hugely better solution.

You are killing yourself to make things work that apparently don't like each other.. which in the wireless world is the norm. Especially as you are mixing apple and non-apple stuff.

The TV will be very much windows world type device.

The TC on the other hand gives a nod to windows.. reluctantly..

So you need to do a few things.

1. Change all names to SMB standard.

Short.. 8-12 characters is plenty.. two is enough eg TC.

No spaces..

No special characters like Apple's apostrophe they just love.. ''''

eg

Name the Time Capsule TC

Name the 2.4ghz wireless TC24ghz

I recommend separate name for 5ghz.. TC5ghz

2. Set security to WPA2 Personal with similar rule passkey.. short no spaces pure alphanumeric.

3. Although the TV doesn't need it.. set file sharing page, workgroup to WORKGROUP and turn on the guest account to read and write..

4. If you still have issues lock the radio channels for 2.4ghz, try 1, 6, 11 as these are the only non-overlapping channels.

5. Make sure the range is not too far.. test this with the TC in the same room as the TV.

6. If all the above fail test with no security.

Done this. It gives me a third network after main TC and Guest Networks

So what are the names of the three networks?

a. I'm guessing passkey is the same as password and you mean that the length of them should also be short. What's the maximum number of characters?

Yes, sorry if I confused you.. it is a password. For WPA2 AES.. ie Personal your key can be very long.. if you are paranoid use very long.. but 8-12 characters is plenty.. it is for the time being unhackable.. as long as you use a mix of numbers and upper and lower case and not dictionary word.

a. Can't see this anywhere, not obvious to me anyway.

You do need to spend some time just trawling through all the pages of the airport utility.

Anything to do with disk is on the disk page.

4. If you still have issues lock the radio channels for 2.4ghz, try 1, 6, 11 as these are the only non-overlapping channels.

a. Again not sure where to find these.

Change radio channel selection to manual.. then click edit.

You discover this stuff by playing.. have a play.. press every single option in the TC.. and see what it does.. then press reset and start again.

3bars on the TV should be enough. Test with the TC on channel 1, 6, 11 for 2.4ghz.. the 5ghz will not matter .. the TV is only using 2.4ghz.

A test with no security is of value.. as it gives you a chance to see if the security is the problem.. Test can go for 5min .. then put security back on again. Tests.. are necessary.

Finally if it cannot work with automatic dhcp settings.. as sometimes happens.. if possible setup manual IP setting in the TV.

eg if the TC is at default IP.. 10.0.1.1

then set the TC to 10.0.1.201

subnet mask 255.255.255.0

gateway 10.0.1.1

DNS either 10.0.1.1 or 8.8.8.8

See if that works.

OK, downloaded version 5.6 of Airport Utility.

So, I started to go through your settings and have only managed to locate a few of them.

1. Change all names to SMB standard.

a. All names are now less than 12 characters without spaces and apostrophes

b. Name the 2.4ghz wireless TC24ghz - I can't see this anywhere.

c. I recommend separate name for 5ghz.. TC5ghz - Done this. It gives me a third network after main TC and Guest Networks

2. Set security to WPA2 Personal with similar rule passkey.. short no spaces pure alphanumeric.

a. I'm guessing passkey is the same as password and you mean that the length of them should also be short. What's the maximum number of characters?

a. Again not sure where to find these.

5. Make sure the range is not too far.. test this with the TC in the same room as the TV.

a. Can't quite make it to the same room but have moved it to the hallway next to the room with the TV. Now getting a 3 bar signal on TV

6. If all the above fail test with no security.

a. Hopefully I won't need this!

Any more help would be appreciated. Would screenshots help?

One thing that you didn't mention in your reply was where to name the 2.4GHz wireless. I hope you can guide me through with another screenshot, as I'm hoping this may be it. I renamed the 5GHz wireless under 'Wireless Network Options' so renamed it as TC5GHz and this is the third network. The 3 I have are 'TimeCapsule', 'GuestNet' and 'TC5GHz'

Tried changing the radio channels. Previously set on 2, so tried 1, 6 and 11. Only 6 was detected by the TV but wouldn't go further than connecting to TC.
