Add me to the list of disappointed customers.
I've been having this issue since June, 2013. And the issue has been getting progressively worse. I have had the EXACT same issue as the original poster.
I've been to the Genius Bar three times since August, each time the diagnostics return no errors with the hardware. Thinking, again, that it could be software related, the last visit to the Genius Bar resulted in yet another complete wipe and install of Mavericks (this was the third time). However, instead of performing a Time Machine restore, this time, I started fresh - all new app downloads (latest versions), rebuilding iTunes libraries, etc. I did not install any third party apps such as DockView or gfxCardStatus this time, except Google Earth (notorious for its discreet graphics use).
So I received my wiped/freshly installed MBP (early 2011, of course), on Sunday afternoon... I spent the lesser part of the next 24 hours getting my laptop back to a usable state, I was essentially "up & running" 24 hours after I got my laptop back. After running Google Earth for a while, on Monday night, it hung with a white screen (THAT was new) and it took me an hour to successfully boot (after many attempts to safe boot or enter recovery mode). Same issue of the blue screen with vertical black pinstripes. I just hung my head in defeat.
Many hours have been lost trying to get this laptop to work the way a $2000US laptop should. I don't know how much more of this I can take - I am losing confidence in Apple products.
