lightning to USB midi keyboard

Hi

Do I need the official apple lightning to female USB connector (or camera connector) or can I just plug in the cable that comes with the ipad 4 and iphone 5 straight into the USB midi keyboard...?

The latter doesn't work - any ideas why not?

I think that it really depends on the midi keyboard you are using. I've tried several adapters to get the USB straight into the midi keyboard, most of them do not work. The Apple lightning to USB 3.0 camera kit is the best feature I've seen yet and the only one that works consistently. Plus it can power your mididevice if it's small, and charge your Apple device at the same time.

I don't know if USB C works with lightning devices, but the lightning to USB 3.0 adapter from Apple works great. It also has a lightning input so that the adapter can power bus powered small midi devices as well as charge the iPad or iPhone.

But I'd really like to use the generic adapter that costs $8 without the iOS shutting it down every five minutes.
