I've got a similar issue: It's about an in and a half wide of verticle colored lines going up & down the screen. My 15in macbook pro is a late 2011 model.
Here's a couple pics of the screen... the first is a picture I took with my iphone showing the vertical lines and the 2nd is a screen shot that does NOT show the vertical lines for some reason. What does this mean?

Here's a Screenshot taken with the computer showing NO lines on the screen:
Doesn't this model have 2 different graphic cards?
Is it both both cards or just one?
Did you run a Apple HArdware test just for kicks?

Is this periodic and fleeting or persistant? YOu do not supply much information or screen shot. I would take it in for a definitive resolve.
Are you near a quick trip to the Genius bar?
faulty display, faulty GPU, faulty cable???
Your display is almost definitely broken. You can confirm this by connecting your CPU to an external display. If the lines do not show up, it is your machine's display. This is an expensive fix out of warranty, but not as expensive as replacing the logicboard.
Is it possible that it's the cable though as opposed to the LCD? When I had an LCD problem with a previous macbook pro the faulty display was showing all over the screen in different areas of the screen depending on how I moved it... but with this problem the vertical lines show up all in the same place about an inch and a half wide.
Thanks for any advice.
If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing.
That is a broken display.
You took a screenshot, it showed up fine. Your GPU is fine. This is most definitely the display. It is typical the problem is intermittment and gradually gets worse. Sorry.
