I have an old iPad and a new iPad 4...wanting to know if the software can be upgraded on the old iPad to ios 6?

OK, can I upgrade to 5.1.1 or is this the way it came? And maybe you can help with this question. When I connedted my new iPad to my iMac I did not create a new ipad for my itunes b/c I wanted to download everything that was on the old one to the new one. Is this gonna mess me up when I try to add/dowload stuff to the old Ipad? And is there anyway to go into itunes and rename the old ipad and I guess on the ipad??
