Standby & DVD player conflict

Hello !

3 years after the acquisition of my Leopard MBP, currently running with Mac OS 10.5.8, it still gives me a lot of trouble, even if already in its warranty period the service Apple changed its motherboard and also the AirPort Card.

Since the original DVD burner no longer works , I just mounted today a "Toshiba-Samsung TS-L632", and enlarged a little bit the DVD aperture in the front panel case of the MBP.

After a P-RAM memory reset, the new DVD player works well. 🙂

But after only one standby, for example by clicking on "Sleep" utility, the new DVD player does not work any more, and lauching for instance the "Disk Utility" induces the traditional endless rainbow disk ... 😟

After a classic reboot, following the above-mentioned probs, the reader is no longer supported, but one can repeat the standby operations ...

To use again the DVD facilities, I need to reset again the P-RAM and/or the Mac SMC ... !!

In summary there is a conflict between standby operation and the DVD-player suppport ...

So, any advice would be welcome ... cause I am cracking up with this computer !! 😢

Thank you in advance, Best regards.

In my experience with hundreds of different Macs coming into our facility each year, using standby is the cause of many problems.

We never use standby or sleep as it disconnects the video cards and drives out of our ststem.

To me if everything is working well from a standard boot, never use standby or sleep, just shut the Macdown properly after working on the machine. In our conference suite, if a Mac sleeps during an interval, the optical drive, Keynote, Quicktime player never work properly untill its re-booted.

Using Console in Utilities seems to be a very good idea !

--> Indeed, here is the report of Console when the standby or sleep mode is ok (when the optical player is not seen by the MBP) :

Should I deduce that this optical player is not fully compatible ?? while the original one must necessarily be ...

OK, good work, off hand, that seems like a Hardware problem with the Disk or Disc.

Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some Discs have it inexplicably on Disc #2. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

Jan 6, 2013 1:30 PM in response to BDAqua

Done this day ! but after the long AHT analysis, approximately 90 minutes, no pb was identified by this test. 😢

I was so surprised by this result that I made many tens of regular boots, and I found - via the Disk Utility tool - that the MBP supports the DVD player in a really random way, so regardless of any standby !!

Thus one might think that the AHT analysis was carried out in a case where the DVD player wasn't take into account ...

And furthermore I didn' need to use the original Install Disk, cause holding down the d key at the Boot without inserting the Leopard was enough to launch the Apple Hardware Test.

--> Is it possible to force the launch of this AH test from the CD, when hoping in my case that I will be lucky enough to be in the good case (with the DVD player being seen ...) ?? via d & c key ??

Jan 7, 2013 2:39 AM in response to castanou34

To summarize, I think you were absolutely right when you said that the current Toshiba-Samsung DVD player is not fully compatible.

But the question remains: is this a hardware problem? that does not explain a priori the random effects observed about supporting or not the DVD player ... or is it a software problem, ie a feature restrained by Apple, that does not allow to use anything other than Apple Certified disk players ... ?? but it's very surprising that we are not able to bypass this restriction ... tell me ...

Thanks !
