Adding Network Printer for MAC OS 9.2.2

Hello,

I need help in setting up a network printer for my MAC running OS 9.2.2. The printer(Canon i560) is connected to a Linksys switch with an integrated printser USB port. The MAC is also connected to the Linksys Switch which then connected to a Negear router which is connected to a Cable Modem.

The MAC can access the Internet and can printer directly to the i560. I want to move the i560 to the print server and then configure the MAC to recognize the network printer. The printer server address is 192.168.1.60 (static IP).

I am not sure how to add a network printer. Linksys does not provide a MAC setup disk, only a Windows setup disk. I set up the print server correctly with a PC and I can print to the i560 from the PC, I just need now to figure out how to add a network printer using MAC OS 9.2.2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Alan

First, make sure you've got the drivers for the printer. You may have to search for them on the Web. Also make sure you have the Adobe PS (PostScript) driver installed. You can find it at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=44&platform=Macintosh

If both of these are installed, it should be a simple matter of selecting the Adobe PS icon in the left panel of the Chooser. The printer should show up in the list in the right panel of the Chooser. Just select the printer and click "Create."

Hello and thanks for the reply. I am fairly new to MACs eventhough I have a older one. I think the commands you gave me are for OS X, do you what the counter part command (for adding a printer) is for OS 9?

Thanks again...Alan

What I gave you is the OS 9 version. The Chooser is only in 9 and below -- OS X uses a totally different print system. Look under your Apple menu at the extreme left end of your menu bar for the Chooser. I had to re-download the Adobe PS driver a couple months ago after one of the OS 9 boxes at work crashed, so it was still available from Adobe as of the first of the year or so.

Don't let my registered OS fool you. I use 10.3.9 at home, but I still have 5 OS 9 boxes to maintain at work. Although we're supposed to upgrade to X (finally) sometime in July.

Hello,

I finally was able to follow your directions, and I downloaded Adobe PS and installed it. The Canon i560 drivers are already on the MAC as that is the directly attached printer.

When I select the Adobe PS icon in the left panel of the Chooser only the Linksys print server name shows up. I select that and then it asks me to select a designated name, and it only shows Laserjet printers. The actual printer is a Canon i560 Inkjet. I don't think the "designated" name should matter, but I am confused as to how the Adobe PS gets linked to the i560 print drivers.

When I select a designation it completes the setup, and when I go to print it sends to Adobe print queue but it never physically prints and the queue is empty.

I am almost there, but I am confused as to why I just can't add a network printer (at 192.168.1.60) with MAC OS 9.2.2? Also something is not clicking between the Adobe PS and the i560 print drivers. When I go to reconnect the printer directly to the iBook it prints find to the Canon i560 so I am thinking that the i560 print drivers are loaded ok.

Any ideas would be appreciated...thanks...

My experience with Macs, PCs, ethernet, and print servers in a mixed network is that most generic PC print servers will only work with PostScript printers with a Mac. Therefore, while your Mac may see the print server, it can't see a printer that isn't a PostScript printer (e.g., almost all inkjet printers). So if your Canon is an inkjet, your Mac will probably not be able to use it through your print server.

Check your printer server literature including PDF manuals on disk or on line. They probably say that the printer server works with Apple Macintosh for postscript printers only. This problem is true for OS 9 and OS X, so changing OSs won't solve the problem.

I just read over your reply again, and noticed something I missed the first time.

After you select the print server in the right pane of the Chooser and click "Setup," you should get a dialog box with several buttons on it. One should be "Select PPD." Click that and select the PPD file for your printer in the resulting file dialog. The software makes its best guess where the PPD file is stored, but you may have to navigate to it if you put it someplace weird.

If that doesn't work, try sharing the printer using the USB Printer Sharing control panel as I suggested in my earlier post.

Hi

I just bought a pc hp pavillion for my family. I prefer my Mac G3. I also have a linksys wireless. My G3 is connected to internet via a cable modem then it is connected to the linksys wireless so I can access the internet on my PC. I have cnnected my HP laserjet 5m through the linksys and was hoping printing wireless but it does not work.

I thouhgt I had a add a printer network but I am not sure how to do it,.

Anyone knows what I am talking about?

You need a parallel port print server (wired or wireless, but wired are cheaper , easier to set up, and more dependable) to hook to the parallel port on your LJ 5M, assuming your LJ 5M is a postscript printer. If it isn't a postscript printer, you may be out of luck getting your Mac to see it, but your PC should still see it on the network and be able to use it.

Also, be careful on those parallel port print servers. Some are designed to plug right into the parallel port connection on the printer. Great, except you may not then be able to put the case back on the printer. With my LJ 5MP, I ended up buying a special parallel M to F connector cable so that I could plug in the cable and then plug the print server into the other end of it. My parallel port print server is wired via ethernet to my Linksys wireless router (has a built-in 4 slot wired switch for my LAN).

Hi, got the same problem for half a year ago when I was sharing my Canon i560 as a networkprinter on a Windows computer. What I did was to look for a thirdparty application, and I found one that worked but unfortunately this is not shareware(test period for 1 month or so).

Go to www.printfab.net and intstall the program and it will sort your problem for a month at least:)
