Asus PB278Q resolution problem on mac mini 2012

I have this monitor on a MacBook 2013 15" i7 Retina. On HDMI and DVI it would only do 1920x1080. I bought this cable from Scan (A UK online retailer) and can get the full 2560x1440:

I have a macmini 2012 late and Asus PB278Q Display. I followed your suggestions to buy a miniDisplay port to DisplayPort cable from an online store here in China (www.jd.com). It works and gives me 2560x1440 resolution. However, it also gives me a wakeup issue - after macmini sleeps for several hours, Asus PB278Q always says "no signal" and gives me a all black screen.

Forcifully shutting down macmini and powering it back on solves the problem. But it seems quite persistent. I can't do this each time. I am sure it does harm to the hard disk and other parts of macmini.

Any suggestions ?

I have the same problem as you and it seems to be an issue with the monitor itself. You don't have to power cycle the macmini. What I do is unplug and replug the monitor. That does it for me when this issue arises from time to time.

I also have the same problem with my MacBookPro Retina too - same solution (power cycle the monitor). I suspect there is a firmware fault with the monitor for it to just stop responding like that.

Thanks for your feedback. But it does not solve the issue when I unplug the MiniDisplay plug from Macmini and plug it back into the thunderbolt port. I got some good advice. You may try, too:

I am going to buy this monitor too, the sales associate told me that a HDMI cable should come with the monitor. To have full resolution, you should use the original HDMI cable that came with it. However, I haven't get the chance to try till my new asus monitor arrives.

Facts: the sales associate told me, sometime ago, a person with alienware pc came to try out this monitor. The sales didn't bother to use the original HDMI, instead they use cables from the fixing deparment. Samething happened; it took them all day long to figure out what was wrong. Then they finally tried the original cable which works perfectly fine with full resolution. (Futureshop)

Gook luck, Leo the Lu, but I tried the original HDMI cable with macmini, and only got 1920x1080. In changed to DisplayPort cable and got full resolution. If you still can't get full, try displayport cable instead.

Same for me - HDMI on my MacBookPro Retina was only capable of 1920x1080 (cable that came with the screen).

We did not mean unplugging the display port cable - we meant the power for the monitor. The Mac is not at fault here, as far as I can tell... It's the software inside the screen thats freezing.

Summary for those people who are having same problem.

HDMI Cable* : max 1920x1080
DisplayPort Cable : max 2560x1440
*It does not matter original or non-orignial HDMI Cable, they are the same.What does DisplayPort looks like?

I totally agree. It has been tested a number of times on my macmini system. I happen to have exactly the same display.

I have a recent MBP 15" mid 2014 ( OS X 10.10 ), I bought the PB278Q today along with the StarTech Mini DisplayPort™ to DisplayPort (MDP2DPMM6). Out of the box with source set to Display Port I was not getting an image.

I then hooked up a thunderbolt to HDMI and that work. I kept mucking around with zapping the PRAM switching source sets etc, then finally with my StarTech plugged in and source set to DisplayPort ( both devices powered on ) I pulled out the display port from the bottom of the monitor and then plugged it back in firmly. And then all was working and I was getting my full 2k resolution.

Can't be sure what the fix was, but that is the sequence that fix it.

Yes, not infrequently users fail to fully insert the mini displayport plug fully into the jack. Especially when new firm force is required to fully seat/insert the plug.

I have a mac Mini bought new spring 2015.

I Plugged it through minidisplay-displayPort(1) and minidisplay-hdmi(2) on an Asus pb278Q monitor. I Could not get resolution higher than 1920x1080 with (2) but could get 2560x1440 when using (1). When it worked it was great but it often just did not work. "No Display port signal" on the monitor 10% of the time and usually when my kids had to do homework on it and panicked because it would not work. When this happened, I unplug/replug the cables, do multiple reboot, go through hdmi, try new cables, ... but I never could find the problem (mini, cables, monitor?) or to find a way to efficiently reget the signal back when I lost it, it would just be back eventually. I even went to the apple store where they could not reproduce the problem with their cable/monitor and I was on the verge of bringing everything back to them so they can tell me what was wrong with my exact setting.

I was at that point that I tried to just use a hdmi cable from the monitor directly into the hdmi output of the mini 2-3 weeks ago. To my surprise, I was then able to get the full 2560x1440 resolution (which a was unable to have when I used the minidisplay-hdmi cable) and I have no loss of video signal to report since then. I do not know why I did not use that solution before appart from the fact that my initial tests suggested me that hdmi was limited to 920x1080.

In any case, I knock on wood and since I lost so much time with this problem, I hope this post eventually helps somebody.
