Try this:

Starting over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

1. Open the library package like this.

User uploaded file

2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.

User uploaded file

This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Thanks, OT, but I'm already lost on step 1. "About iPhoto" is greyed out now, but a couple of days ago I checked for updates and it said I had the latest version. So I guess I'm looking for a Masters file, but I don't know where that is. Spotlight shows me a masters file with pics but only goes up to May 2011, about the time I bought this computer. I don't see anything in the Library folder that looks like it either. I've got Library > iApps > iPhoto > AlbumData.xml. But that doesn't look right.

"Show Package Contents" isn't an option when I control-click on Library. The options are: Open, Show Original, Move to Trash, Get Info, Burn "Library" to Disc..., Duplicate, Make Alias, Quick Look Library, Share, Copy Library, Show View Options, Label (can select color), Folder Actions Setup, and Scan with ClamXav.

There's another library.

Does this sound like what you're talking about?:

Start with iPhoto closed.

Go to: User name>Pictures>iPhoto Library

Control click on iPhoto Library and select "Show Package Contents" from the drop down menu.

Select "Masters" file

Hold down alt/option key and click on iphoto to open it.

In the box that says "Which photo library do you want iPhoto to use?", select "new library" and click "choose".

When message with "To get started with Iphoto, do any of the following:" appears, drag folders from the "Masters" file (that you opened by selecting show package contents before) to the iphoto window.

Cause that's what I'm doing right now...
