Thanks MadMacs0! I have successfully rebooted my mac with absolutely no problem and cannot find that file anymore! All should be good now. Really appreciated you and Thomas' detailed help! Great stuff 🙂
I followed the instructions to remove Genieo listed here: http://www.wikihow.com/Delete-Genieo
It worked, but I have the feeling that my Macbook is now slower than it was.
Just a hunch. Anyone else with this experience?
Probably the reference you used, did not remove all the parts of
the adware or badware your computer has in it; some of those
add more stuff depending on where it came from.
Did you read through this thread of several pages & use it to
help remove the genieo and troubleshoot your issue?
Thomas R and the adware removal tool part of this thread is
among the better parts, as there is a resolution to the issue
in that direction. Not claims by others who did not look deep.

Would seem that you did not look far enough. 😐
Those are old instructions for Genieo 1.0. Use the Adware Removal Tool mentioned.
There is only one way to rid yourself completely of this horrendous pest, it has been highlighted several times, folks should take time and read all the posts and realise the only solution is to use the method outlined in http://www.thesafemac.com/art/
Thanks to Thomas r and K Shaffer and the above link I am now rid of Genieo
Good luck to all

Not sure why you chose to address your reply to me. I'm one of those that have been recommending only that site for several months now.
Hi all. I have a quick question. So I purchased my 13" Macbook Air about two weeks ago and already have this darn virus. The thing is, there is no Genieo app or icon on my drive. I only realized I had this virus when my google searches kept going to Bing. I checked in my Safari Extension preferences and there I see Omnibar 1.2 by installmac.
I am NOT computer savvy in any way beyond your basic stuff, but I began following http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/ and couldn't get past the first step. I have a few of the items on step 3 but
/private/etc/launchd.conf
is nowhere to be found. Good thing is, this computer is new so I still have my old mac with all of my iTunes, etc (not a reliable backup, I know). I'm just weary to try anything and do permanent damage to my new laptop.
Any advice from you guys? Also, if I just go ahead and take this to the Genius Bar, can they help me remove the virus or is this out of their realm. I'd really prefer to do that but I'm not sure if this is something they do. Thanks everyone!
EDIT: I bit the bullet and used the TMS Removal Tool. That seemed to get everything *fingers crossed*. Thanks for all you guys do though!
Thank you so much! I was ready to goto the apple store, but this cleared it all up.
I found that http://www.genieo.com/uninstall-genieo/ .... works with no problem.
A few weeks ago I was infected by this adware genieo that redirects search. I tried everything and finally came up with a permanent quick free solution. I looked through this post and saw no mention of this program.
The anti virus software company Bitdefender has a quick free download program to remove Genieo from the mac.
Before running the removal tool I suggest you run Clamxav, a free download from the App Store. This found my infection. After I applied the adware removal tool from Bitdefender it could no longer be found and everything has worked correctly for several weeks. Remember to update the Clamxav definition before seaching for Genieo.

When done with those genieo and bitdefender methods, you could (may) still have some
left-over bits of the original problems, in addition to extras added by those removal tools.
(Some others have copied Thomas R's essential method & adopted them w/o benefit
of reference to his efforts, and sent them off as their own works; but they are not.)
The troubles with the genieo uninstaller and bitdefender have been covered previously.

No, it does not. It leaves an active process and a couple of files behind, so even though it becomes less noticeable, it is probably still serving ads and slowing your Mac. Follow the instructions that others have given you.
YOUR A JOKE! I WOULD LIKE TO GET MY HANDS ON YOU AND THE PEOPLE IN YOUR COMPANY THAT CAUSE ALL THESE PROBLEMS TO
INNOCENT PEOPLE! FIRST THE PEOPLE THAT YOU CAUSED PROBLEMS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO EEAT THE **** OUT OF YOU OR ANYONE ELESE THAT HAS DONE THIS VIRUS AND THEN YOU SHOULD BE SENT TO JAIL WHER3 YOU BELONG!!
You have a lot of nerve to respond to anything! Your company and or you should be put in Jail.
