I have thrown the Genieo program in the trash and I have set my homepage and my Default search engine in Safari to Google, but every time I search Genieo still comes up. How do I get rid of this leech of a program?
Thank You,
Suzanne
Anything in Thomas Reed's Adware Removal Guide that helps:
Note that, since this discussion was originally started, things have changed. The uninstaller is not sufficient to remove Genieo. See the link Paul_31 gave, which has up-to-date information and instructions.
1. put it in your dock
2. Right click on it
3. Go options and untick open at login
4. Restart your mac
5. go into finder
6. find Genieo and drag it to trash
7. empty trash
I'm guessing that after thirteen months, this is no longer an issue for ramonmambo.
Also, your solution will only get rid of a small part of the entier Genieo engine. Infected users need to check in all the places listed in the reference Paul_31 gave.
Harry......Thank you very much. Worked like a charm.🙂

But that does not get rid of everything. Have a look at http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/ to get rid of the rest.
I have what may be a super-dumb question: I'm trying to follow the instructions in
http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/ but it seems I can't find Genieo to close it. If I try to move the application to the trash, it says it can't be moved because it's open. But it's not in my dock and it doesn't appear as a choice under Force Quit.
How can I close this thing?
Never mind! I found it. Hopefully it's all gone now.
Hi there. I need some help please. I followed the instructions posted, and restart the computer like it said. Now my screen is white with a spinning wheel. It won't boot. Could someone please help.

Apparently not carefully enough.

"Restore from backup and start over. That's how badly Genieo has sabotaged your system." [Linc Davis, 2014]

This is a common side-effect if the removal instructions are not followed to the letter. There is a file that, if left in place after one of the other files is removed, will cause this. Emptying the trash at the wrong time, removing files in the wrong order or simply missing that one vital file can easily cause this.
Unfortunately, there's no easy solution unless you are comfortable with the Terminal. Restoring from a backup made prior to this is the best solution if you're not. If you have Time Machine backups, see:
I have a similar problem regarding the Genieo/Bing hijack. I followed the instructions - but evidently not close enough- to remove the filepaths listed at http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/. After moving the /usr/lib/libfiles to the trash, my mac froze while waiting to delete them, and now it won't open at all (blue screen has a dark dash spinning in a circle). I tried to restart in safe mode, holding the shift key at the same time as the power button, but no luck. I didn't back up my computer. Please don't state the obvious and tell me how stupid that was. Is there any way that
I can get my computer back?
Thank you.
Melissa
