My photos are all stored on an external hard drive and was wondering if I can stream through Apple TV.

They won't "stream" unless you pull them into iPhoto. You can see them through Airplay on your Apple TV by clicking on each file from your Mac

Thanks for your reply - - but what if I have the iPhoto Library app on the external drive. Is that possible. My problem is that I am running out of disk space on my macbook and want to store all my photos on an external.

I don't think you can have the app on the external drive but maybe you can have the "data". The app will likely need to reside in the "applications" and serve to the data.....
