As we enter 2013, I am desperate for an email program that will work like Mail did before Mountain Lion.
Mail 6.2 with OS 10.8.2 is a real disappointment - unreliable, constantly taking accounts offline, slow, etc etc.
Numerous problems as noted on this & other forums continue with no sign of help from Apple.
Would appreciate any suggestions/recommendations for an alternative program.

Since I installed Mavericks, Mail has been acting up, in that the folder in Mail do not reflect the reality of the actual account they are connected to. I have most gmail accounts. If I read the email on Gmail then Mail will sit there and not update either the unread count or when I click on the folder (=tag on gmail) the mail remains listed as 'unread'. I've got a folder open right now and its insisting these Mail items are unread although I read them all over an hour ago. And I had a whole of 'Smart Mailboxes' that aggregated a bunch of folders together and showed me just the unread items but forget about it, my "smart" mailboxes are now useless.
I've had to resort to having gmail open in my browser.
Some people on twitter have mentioned that has similar problem with Mail pre-Mavericks so it might not be a Mavericks issue.
I tried the index rebuild mentioned here and it has not affected any of this behaviour.

Mozilla no longer supports OS X 5.x, Leopard.

My understanding is that folder is used by the new sandbox features of mountain lion and is not needed.
It is needed, but gets automatically recreated (and rebuilt so any corruption is removed).
