Is iPad2 disposable?

I've had my ipad2 for about 14 months. It only worked for the first two, then it went bonkers.I put it away until today. I took it the the genius bar at my local apple store. The problem is that it is locked (I didn't lock it.) and it does not respond to touch. The genius guy told me that it could not be repaired because it is all in one piece and can not be opened for repair. He did offer to accept it as a trade-in for another ipad2 if I paid $249.Has anyone else had this experience? Has anyone been told that their iPad2 could not be repaired? Thx.

Inside the case, an iPad isn't modular like a computer or laptop. It's bits and pieces literally sodered together. You can't take it apart and swap out parts anymore than you could take apart that malfunctioning flash drive or DVD burner.

What they do is sell you the refurb replacement. THey then send yours back to the factory who will take it apart and salvage parts for other refurbs.

Unfortunately, had you taken it in when it first started to mess up, then if what's wrong is a manufacturer's defects, they would have likely replaced it free. But that warranty is only for the first year, which is gone and over.
