Yahoo messenger for Mac stopped displaying Real names, showing only ID's

I recently developed this issue: my YM client no longer wants to display the Real names of my contacts but only the ID's. That is quite frustrating given the fact that it is almost impossible to remember everybody by their ID's.

I had seen another post of a somewhat similar issue with iMessage and YM, and I tried the solution given there: Go to System Preferences>Security&Privacy>Contacts and there I unchecked the tick from Yahoo Messenger. After doing that, my YM client behaves strangely: it gets stuck on "Connecting" yet people are able to message me (obviously always seeing only the ID). As soon as I check back the YM client in Contacts, it works again (that is being able to see the contact list and all).

If anyone faced this issue before or heard of it, please let me know.

PS: It seems that now it only works if I leave that box un-checked (still seeing only ID's)...very weird

Dear Ralph,

I tried everything, from re-installing the same version to installing older versions...nothing worked...on my Snow Leopard MBP the same YM version shows the Real Names while on Mavericks it stopped....so there must be some compatibility issue. I hope Yahoo will make the necessary updates. Anyways, I stopped using YM long ago after being unable to find a solution, so I use the iMessage instead. It shows the Real Names but lacks some other things.

Cheers

HI,

I rarely use my Yahoo accounts (I have two for some reason)

I am using version 3.0.2

I don't seem to have this issue in Mavericks.

AS a result I have little to offer in suggestions.

Hello wagis,

Thank you for trying to help on this.

This is what happens when you allow Yahoo Messenger to access the contacts:

- If YM is started and you allow access in System Preferences to the Contacts, then nothing changes in Yahoo Messenger Application

- when you restart the app (Yahoo Messenger), it only shows as if it's not logged in (Connecting), it doesn't show the list of contacts at all, but it does run in the background - people can write to you and you see messages coming, you appear to be online, etc

So you either get a list of IDs (not names) or "Connecting" window, with no IDs or names.

Thanks again,

Alin

Hello JuniorPro,

For me, after I upgraded to mavericks I encountered this issue of showing the IDs. And the procedure I wrote above fixed it.

I am not sure under what circumstance, you started to see the IDs but may be reinstalling the messenger might help. When I upgraded to mavericks the messenger was giving me problems like not being able to log in and reinstalling it solved the problem.

Good luck.

Finally, I've joined this community as I've spent two days trying to get my friends names to show up on Yahoo for Mac. Yes, I've done all the things suggested and, when I log out, it just switches right back to ID's instead of real names. I've even tried a totally new Yahoo address and nothing has worked.

This is the most frustrating thing as the same happened last year with 'avatar' images - they simply would not upload or 'save'. Although they showed up in the library of photos.

So currently, I have to log in, right click on each name (rename) and then all's fine for the day until I log out. Next morning, same thing. Nothing saved!

😠

Edit note: This has only started to happen this last week or so.

YIM display just messed up again today for some reason, and I just verified again the steps that I had, still works. But since I've moved to Mavericks, so here's the steps again:

1. System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab > Contact in left panel > check Yahoo! Messenger.

2. now launch Contacts > Preferences for Contacts > General tab > set Default Account to Yahoo!

3. now lauch Yahoo Messenger, it should now display the names from whatever you have in Yahoo contact, not just ID.

Hi,

It is very odd as they also have a download page.

https://messenger.yahoo.com/platform/mac/

However that same 3.0.2 version is the one I installed on 5th July 2012.
