how do I run windows with Boot Camp

Hi

My wife needs to use software which is only made for PC. How do I set up Boot Camp to work and where do I get a copy of Windows (and what version do I need as know nothing about PC based software/ systems)?

Thanks

Consider using Windows in a virtual machine instead of Boot Camp (unless high performance is required), simpler and much less room for error.

VirtualBox is free and will run all versions of Windows from XP onwards.

You will need to purchase Windows, I suggest Windows 7 Home (System Builder) expect to pay $100 approx (Amazon)

OK, so Windows/bootcamp/VM aside, is it worth upgrading a G4 to run OS X or is there too much to 'upgrae'?

I gave a Powerbook G4 to a 12 year old (son of a friend) and would never do it again, nothing he wanted to use was available in PPC versions. 1 year later the machine was dead from lack of care and lack of use, that is what happens to obsolete machines handed to children.

I had spent about $180 replacing its battery and maxing the Ram before I handed it over.

I have seen that thread, plausible maybe, easy no, free no.

And then you will be limited to 5 year old (or older) software ..... the G's have passed their sell-by date.

That will make him hate it even more.

Just a fun FYI. You can run Windows or MS DOS on just about any Mac with an emulator. My oldest is a Powerbook 540c with Soft PC. I have several more PPC PowerBooks including G4 processors with Real PC and Virtual PC. As one would expect the performance takes a hit so only simple software will be satisfactory.

I bought a G4 iBook a few weeks ago so I could run Classic environment and use OS 9.2.2/OS X 10.4.11. As an experiment I installed RealPC v1.0.9 - Windows 95. Amazingly it works very well. For your entertainment I took a screenshot so as to appreciate the catchy wallpaper I have selected. Note the Mac like positionong of the desktop icons. 😁

if you go with something more lightweight... you'd look at something that uses Wine... like Crossover, or Wineskin. Wine is an implementation of Windows APIs, not exactly an emulator or a virtual machine.. its just made to run Windows software... without needing Windows. It *can* be much more difficult to get a program working right... and might even be impossible.... whatever the case, it is much more difficult to use. Crossover is not free like most other methods of using Wine on the Mac, but it is made to be much more user friendly, and they do have a free trial.

use bootcamp to install drivers on your usb ONLY.

reboot the computer

boot recovery hd partition. .Hold down option/alt before it turns on. the key right in the middle in control and command.

Format Drive To MBR-only in disk ulitiy Go to your hdd.It will say "Macintosh HD" Under that you see "Options" and you click that and click mbr disk or whatever.

put in your windows cd (if you can)

Reboot and Install Windows.Hold down option/alt before it turns on.Keep holding it until you see a menu. You can now put in your windows installation usb or disk if you didnt do it yet.If you dont see a cd saying Windows and EFI boot reboot it and do to same thing..Hold down option/alt before it turns on. If you do,you dont have to reboot.it is right in the middle in control and command. When your done, crate a partiton and install windows

Done. You now have windows installed, with bootcamp!
