Ipod touch 2nd generation - IOS 4.3

My son has a 2nd generation iTouch. When we installed the new version if Itunes it wiped out all data and his apps. When I try to reinstall them, I get the error message that it (App) needs iOS version 3. We are fine with the apps he had and many were paid for, but neither Itunes nor the App store will let me reinstall what he had(!). All that is left is safari, youtube and some music. It HAS to be Apples mistake not to let a user keep his paid and free games that worked fine. How do I get his old apps back?

Sincere apologies. The apps you had in your device was not updated and old versions of the apps which ran perfectly in 4.2.1. When the device was wiped, the apps were gone and thus you should (can) be downloading only the latest version of those apps you had, but your iOS has become un-supported for those to run. You have two steps at your disposal:

1. Contact the developer and ask for a specific version of that app for your device.

2. At past, if you've been downloading apps through your iTunes using PC, then your app installation files (.ipa) will have been backed up, so you can use them to re-install.

So there's nothing more left you can do. I too have the same device by the way.

Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

I concur. Even after May 1st it is possible, but not easy. And, not obvious.

In fact a developer can still support iOS 3.0 if they figure out how it can be done and they want to take the extra time and trouble required to write "valid" vinatge device compatible code.

I am extremely frustrated. Bought my son a refurbished ipod touch 2nd generation for his birthday. He's trying to download some games, and everything requires iOs 4.3. I wish I would have known this before I bought it for him. Apparently I didn't do enough research. Drat. Is anyone aware of ANY games or apps that will run on 4.2.1??
