G5 cooling system leak!

so i read someone else saying he had a leak and most people thought he was making it up...
well my powermac G5 dual 2.5ghz just died the other day from what i initially thought was the power supply. The computer switched off and there was a smell of burned plastic or something. after taking it in to be fixed i was told that what caused it was a leakage of the cooling system. the comp is now about 5 months past its warranty. bought it end of November 2004. have other people had similar problems? is apple doing anything about this problem? any advice?

Hi Thorsten

Thanks for the email and I apologise for the difficulties you have had with this repair.

Your machine is currently listed as out of warranty so there is no approval required from me as it will be a billable repair.

I think it is a shame for Apple first to put a liquit cooling system in and it only las 20 moth.

I'm a web designer working from home. If my machine breaks down i can't work. My 2x2.5 G5 started leaking about 2 months ago. It was 10 months out of warranty - I had never bought the extended warranty. However when i phoned Apple they informed me that it WAS under warranty. Turns out it was marked as 'processing', meaning it was covered but hadnt been paid for. So I quickly coughed up the £199 for the full 3 years warranty, and Apple picked it up the following day. Excellent.

4 days later they confirmed that it was uneconomical to fix - it needed both processors, a new motherboard and a new power supply. So instead they offered me a brand new 2x2.66 Mac Pro! 3 days later it arrived, I placed my old harddrives in it, booted up and was back in business.

To crown this remarkable series of lucky breaks, because I had a brand new warranty, they refunded the value of the unused cover. But for some reason they dated it from the day I actually made the payment ie 2 weeks ago, rather than 11 months ago, and have refunded the full £199. So I got a new Mac for nothing!

Thanks Apple - of course I'll be taking out the exended warranty this time - I've got £199 spare anyway.

Happened to me 😟

I have (had) a G5 Duel 2.7, 19 months in service. I went to check email before going to bed on Dec 30th. First I noticed that the computer was powered down, very odd. Power button would not function; just a "click" like a circuit breaker tripping. I went to check the cables, and that's when I noticed the dreaded smell of burnt electronics.

Thinking it was a blown power supply, I took it to the nearest Apple store the next day and dropped it off. The phone call came a bit later. Coolant leaked out, blew the power supply, also fried one of the processors and it's controller board. $1250.00 to repair!

After researching on the web, it seems that there is high failure rate of the cooling system near the 2 years of service time frame. I now need to discuss with Apple if there is a difference between "out of warranty" and "known defect".

Greetings and welcome.

Call Apple Customer Support and open up a case number. Be polite yet firm in explaining how important your Mac is to you and how much money you are losing by it being down.

This may not get you any immediate action, but it is the only way to get a problem such as this to be officially recognized by Apple.

Luck-
