removing background music from voiceover

If the audio files are mixed- that is VO and Music all in one file- then there is no way to "extract" the VO. As far as the file is concerned, there is no difference between the VO information and the music infomation. All one thing.

I hope I understand correctly that that's what you are hoping to do. And if so, then sorry to be the bearer of bad news. You need to get the original VO file before the music was added...if you can sweet-talk the news station.

or simply cut a new VO track and use valid music

That's what I'd do. Who needs those local news guy VOs anyway? 🙂

But if you like his or her voice, get them to come in and revoice the track! I used to work in local news - believe me, those reporters can always do with a few more bucks! They'll probably do it for a few beers.

and ya never know...buy 'em a few beers and the original source tape may magically appear after all. ;]

If they're young enough, they'll do it just to hear you tell them how great their voice is. But buy them a beer anyway.

Still think the beer idea is one of the best solutions seen on these boards in a while (even if I came up with it myself :-p).

Glad it worked out. Don't feel like an idiot, we've all done that. In fact you should be feeling good that you worked out the solution by paying attention and experimenting with your media.
