I can't add my phone number in iMessage on my iPad

Going into settings on iphone helped me. I had to allow it to use my Apple ID for iMessages, sign in, then my phone number showed up on my iPad for iMessages. Hope this helps someone.

I think I figured it out.

I added my Apple ID address that I use for iMessage to my iPhone and then signed out of iMessage on my iPad. I let it sit for around five minutes and them I signed in again. My phone number was now a checkable box in the send and receive section.

What should I do in this case if I don't have an iPhone? Something more - I have a SIM card in my iPad and this SIM card has a mobile number. So i want to add this number in iMessage.

I cannot add my phone number to set up iMessage on my iPad. There is no place to add my phone number

I just updated to iOS 10.3 and this did the trick.

when you say deselect all of your accounts that are not chat accounts - what do you mean?
