how to restore older back up to retreve contacts which have been erased after up date

You should be syncing your contacts to your computer egularly.
Have you failed to do this?
the last time it wouldnt back up because of curruption, hence why i restored it and up graded from 5 to 6, i thought it could use previous backups i can find them in files but dont know how to install or retreve contacts, even if i could open the file and copy them down.
The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer.
You should have selected the program ( Outlook, address book, google, icloud, etc) to sync with on day one.
If you have failed to do this, then they are likely gone.
You can try restoring from backup. Itunes overwrites the old backup as it creates a new one.
