Why is Safari blocking the latest Java plugin?

Today, I fired up Safari to access my work server but the required Java applet wouldn't run. Safari displayed "Blocked Plugin" and clicking it said my Java was out of date and/or a security risk. I upgraded to the most recent Java (7.10, I believe) and restarted everything, but Safari still blocks the plugin. Firefox does not and confirms it's installed correctly and works.

There's no higher version of Java or my Safari (6.0.2). What is going on and how can I resolve it?

Thanks!

Jeremy

I tried the fix posted by cunnla and it didn't work for me either. But I found a workaround for the Juniper Networks Network Connect tool. The Java plugin is apparently just used for passing credentials from the login page to the app itself. Try this:

1. Launch Network Connect.

2. In the box where it wants your gateway info, enter the base URL for your login page, something like:

xxx.remote.company.com

3. Press enter. It will show the page within the app.

4. Log in normally.

My plug-in is still blocked, but at least I can log into the VPN and work.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Warned of a major security issue in the latest version of Java, Java seven. Until there is an update, Apple is blocking this and it is recommended that you disable Java.

"Hackers have discovered a weakness in Java 7 security that could allow the installation of malicious software and malware on machines that could increase the chance of identity theft, or the unauthorized participation in a botnet that could bring down networks or be used to carry out denial-of-service attacks against Web sites."

Apple blocks OS X Java 7 plug-in as U.S. Department of Homeland Security warns of zero day threat...

Very creepy that they can dictate what I do within Safari on my computer. Will likely start migrating to Firefox as my primary browser.

Do you have a better suggestion? I can see the blog headlines now - "Critical zero-day vulnerability in Oracle's Java being actively exploited and Apple does nothing!"

Yes. OS X ships with XProtect software that can "pull the kill swich" on 3rd party software that would otherwise install keyloggers, ransomware, and other delightful tools. If you really want, i could tell you how to disable XProtect. Then you would be freed from the walled garden.

I am Mac Pro, OSX 10.8.2, Safari 6.0.2, with Java 7 Build 10

I work on a site the required use of Java, it stopped working / blocked use of Java 6 and said I must upgrade Java. I upgraded to Java 7.

Java still does not work in Safari, must us Firefox every day now for situations where I need Java...

After many years using Safari as default I am now considering migrating over to Firefox...
