Help! I cannot play VCD with QuickTime Pro.

I tried to open a .DAT file with QuickTime Pro which alerted me with the following message:

QuickTime cannot open the file AVESQ04.DAT it is not a file that Qucik Time understands (-2048).

However, I read the Help in apple.com, they said it should work. What did I do wrongly???

Mac Mini (Intel), Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would recommend using another program like VLC Media Player to play your VCDs. While QuickTime should be able to play the individual video files, you won't get the menus and other options.

Another alternative is to convert the file into a .mov or .mpg. There's a free application called ffmpegX that can do this.

I have found that if you copy the DAT files to your hard drive, and then change the "DAT" to "MPG" in the file name that Quicktime will play them.

It's been a while, so if I am wrong and "MPG" doesn't work, try "MOV" instead.

I'm pretty sure it was MPG though.

I remember I did this a long time ago, and it worked great.
