MacBook
Yes.
Yes.
I was looking for a non-Windows laptop (I has already built Linux desktops and liked the stability of UNIX-like OS.
Only Apple had a Linux-like system with all matching GPU and display drivers
Just my humble opinion.
I'll second that!
I'll take a look on craigslist and see because I know these are around $300 and that's a reasonable price for me.

I would not touch a stranger's except with a rocket launcher. Unless you get it for $50 and expect that you will get what you pay for. If a friend of yours who you trusted was selling ... different story.
Go to Apple refurbished store (http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac) for lower prices on Apple-certified models.
thanks, honestly I never really was interested in craigslist but I didn't know where to go to get a quality computer.
I am typing on a refurbished model. Others have purchased 4+ refurbished.
I just looked at the refurbished models but their still over my budget and its very tight, its $240 so that wouldn't get me far.I was thinking older models like an iBook or original MacBook and I was also looking at google chromebooks. What I need is something with enough power to get me through everyday life.
Then stick with a PC that Dell sells brand new for around that rate.
You need "reliable, new" more than Apple, I would say.
Macs have value, but you need to be sure you do not spend far more than your budget will allow.
You will note that college students drive Honda Fit (entry level) instead of top fo the line Accords.
what about a Google chromebook?

Would it be worth buying? Yes! But with that kind of budget, you want to get yourself something NEW! Look for non-Apple tablets which come in that range if all you wish to do is just get through everyday life ...
Have not read any reviews of usability or reliability.
Your call, based on reviews from PC magazine or other online review sites.
If you are at a college (sounds like a college student budget), walk up to someone who has it and ask.
Well I just remembered that I need a disc drive to convert CD s to my iPod and I heard that the chromebook doesn't have that, nor do newer pc's or Macs.
$300 is very small budget. Usually only "two external drives for backup" fall into that.
As an alternate ...
You can get a mini-tower case, 500 W powersupply, and deals for about $100 on small motherboards/lowendCPUs. Build your own mini-tower for about $400. Post on message board at college (you did not refute that part) saying "Tell me ow to build and what to buy, please".
Since I only need something low spec, could an iBook g4 or maybe iMac g5 work?
would a MacBook be worth buying?
