You can post in this forum (https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/powerbook) which is decicated to those. Then you will get more responses about availability and reliability of older models.

No! I have an iBook G4 ... and though it works, I use it only as a backup of all my files and pics. The very idea of wanting to use it as a system for everyday use just to save a few bucks is absurd. For document creation, its good enough. To browse the web takes forever. To store music and podcasts is good, for now. But thats about it.
Good note.So what would be recommended?a laptop for everyday life,has a disc drive,in my price range,and isn't too old or slow.I could also live with a desktop.
Build one. Magazines cover the process, and people who have done it can tell you the correct parts.
May not be pretty, but will cover you and you will learn.
In that price range you dont get anything except a tablet. Unless you settle for a functionally unsound museum piece.

If it comes from Apple Refurb store, yes.
But ... PLEASE ... do not kill yourself financially over an brand name.
I recently bought Refurbished Mac book Pro 15.4 retina display 2012 model pick up the item at Apple store very happy and excited everything look brand new except when I turn the Mac book Pro comes up Someone name with Chinese language I guest Apple Tech forgot to reformat this PC and send it to me oops! I call them and they said never seen this happen before sorry Apple I really like the Mac book but I don't read Chinese. I grues Refurbished came from overseas (China Flea market store!)😢😟
