Safari playing avi files within browser

So my question is this; How do you play avi video files within a safari web browser window?

Not an easy question. You could say imposible, probably. Would you say pointless, maybe. But wouldn't it open many posibilitys? Now I know I can stream avi files through vlc. It's ok, sometimes it works. But I think that loading videos into a browser would be perfect for me. For me, http is the fastest protocol I have availible. why? I'm running a ubuntu linux with smb and http. I use gnump3d to host my videos for myself.

Anyway, I know that avi files are just wrapped in avi, its not the codec. However if I can get the codec into safari, that would be cool. If I get one, the rest would follow.

So any help is appreciated as I have no idea what path to follow.

Russell, AVI files are windows media files if you download a Windows Media Player for your Mac you can play them.
VLC should handle them as well.

I don't know if you're aware of it, but as Donald has eluded to, VLC can handle video via http protocol, in addition to FTP, MMS and RTSP. It's not an in-browser solution, but using the stand-alone media player does have its perks. You definitely get more functionality than with a browser plugin.

Thanks for the quick reply, I forgot to mention that I know vlc can handle them, but I want safari to do it so I don't have to download them to start watching them. I want to watch wile downloading.

Thanks Yang,

I do know that, but sometimes I have issues with streaming, I'd rather load it up in the browser while I watch it, even if I have to wait a little bit to start.

vlc has a plug-in available for the mozilla browsers. i haven't used it, but this camino user has.

The only other option that I am aware of is to use Internet Explorer Browser or Entourage both beimg Microsoft will play them but other than that I don't know of a way.

Thanks for trying, I gave it a shot too, but it didn't work for me either. I am going to try to go back to 10.3.9 on a old machine and see if it works. I have tried to use IE 5.5 on OS X, but that app is bollocks. I'm still tring to figure this out, if anyone feels like doing any work with me, please post any findings.
