Thanks, pvonk, I got a new email address so changed my Apple ID, which had been the same for years. Then wanted to setup iCloud with the changed Apple ID. The option to edit the email address was grayed out on my iPhone.
After scrolling to the Delete Account button and feeling dumb for not jumping to that solution 😟, I did so and set up iCloud without problem.
Works fine now, of course!
I am having the same issue as Purpleshaz69. I changed my email address and am trying to changle my Apple ID for iCloud. Tried deleting account but it is still asking for my password for the old Apple ID?
To change the ID you have to delete the account, provide the password, then sign back in with the new ID. If it isn't accepting the password, do the following...
If the old ID is yours, and if your current ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
I need to clarify some terminology. An Apple ID is like a user name and it's used to identify either an icloud account and/or an itunes store account. You say "to match my new apple id on my iphone" - but that new ID is being used for what? iTunes and/or icloud? - on the iphone.
And you also ask about changing the your "icloud id" - is this also on the iphone or do you want the "icloud id" that is used on some other device to match the new id you use on the iphone?
On any device, you change the icloud account by going to Settings>icloud, scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Delete Account. Then you reconnect using another id.
Note that when the icloud id is changed on a device, all data stored in in the former icloud account and synced to the device, like email, contacts, calendars, etc. will be deleted from the device. Is this what you want?
Doesn't work for me. I try to select delete account but it keeps asking me for my password on my old Apple id which doesn't exist anymore. And I can't reset the password because the ID doesn't exist anymore. So I am going round in circles :-(
Did anyone ever get a response or answer to this its very frustrating I have the same issue!!
I am on latest IOS as of today I have gone in to iTunes & App Store and succesfully changed to my new Apple ID. I go in to settings and iCloud and my old apple ID is still there but greyed out. I scroll down to "Delete Account" and a box pops up with my old apple ID in it asking for the password. It wont accept the password as the ID has changes and off I go back round the same loop!!! I cant change the Apple ID back so that I can just delete everything and reset the phone as I dont have access to the old email that was the old Apple ID so I cant receive the Verify email to re-activate the old ID!!! Aggggggggg!!! Very annoying what do i do?
I tried to delete the icloud account from my phone because it was set to an old email as the id but it's asking me for the password in order to delete. This is like an endless cycle! Passwords to do everything. Can I just delete the account and start with the new icloud account id and password that I've set up for my iCloud?
🙂Brilliant thanks for the help there that worked, many thanks!!
I still have same issue. When I change to my old address, they send a verification email to the old address (that I do not have access to). Therefore, I'm not able to change it. Please, please, help
I have a similar problem but I'm not sure its exactly the same as what I'm reading here. I have to say this whole process is extremely frustrating and if this is what I have to look forward to in order to use an iphone I'm ready to go back to my old Windows phone!
So I had an itunes account from way back, but the ID for that account did not match my main email account. I also didn't realize I should use either of those for my ID on my phone, so I created a new one. I've now managed to get my iTunes, iCloud, and primary email account all matched up to the same ID (which is a hotmail account). I did this on my computer, then I also changed the information on my iTunes account on my phone and iCloud on my phone (did this by deleting my old account). Everything now has my hotmail account as the ID. However, when I try to update the phone, its still popping up the ID I used when I first got it (which is not an email address). How do I get rid of this so it uses the new ID?
I'm able to use it because I know the PW, but I would like to just use one ID for everything.

I'm not sure I understand when this is occuring. What do you mean when you say you are trying to "update the phone"? Are you trying to change the iCloud ID on the phone?
No, I already changed the iCloud ID on the iphone. I checked under Settings -- iCloud and the (hotmail) ID is now there. When I go into the AppStore on the iPhone and try to update my apps, it pops up the old ID (the one with no email address), in spite of the fact that when I check my Apple ID on my iphone under iTunes and App Store, the new (hotmail) ID is there. The new (hotmail) ID also shows up on my iTunes and my iCloud on my computer.
That happens because apps and other purchased media are permanently tied to the ID used to purchase them. You will always be prompted for the original ID when updating apps. The only way to stop this would be to delete these apps and repurchase them with your new ID.
Thank you, that makes sense.
So, off topic, but the whole reason I made everything match my hotmail address was because my iPhone wasn't synching my Outlook calendar (which is setup for my hotmail account as the main account) and I assumed that was the reason. Now I have everything matching hotmail and it's still not synching.
On my computer (iTunes), I have it set up through iCloud and under the "Info" tab it confirms that my calendars are being synched through iCloud. On my phone, under Settings - iCloud, I have Calendars turned on. Under "Mail, Contacts, Calendars," the Accounts tab lists iCloud first, then Hotmail, then my two other email accounts. On Outlook/Calendars, "My Calendars" is checked, and in addition I can now see a new list of iCloud calendars, which are all blank.
I don't want a bunch of new calendars, I want my existing hotmail calendar on my phone. Do you have any suggestions or should I post this elsewhere?
Thanks for your help.
Edited to add: My contacts aren't synching, either, but my music is.
