Do I really need OS X 10.8?
I am running OS X 10.7.5 and I saw a photo edit software that requires 10.8. Do I really need OS X 10.8 and why?'
BTW: Is mac os x 10.7 the same as Mountain Lion?

If you want to use that software, then the answer is, yes, you need 10.8. Why? Because the software requires it to run.
10.7.x is Lion. It is not the same as Mountain Lion which is 10.8.x.
10.7 is plain old Lion.
10.8 is Mountain Lion.
10.8 offers these additional features:

With these caveats:

Contact the said software developer asking what won't work in Lion, that works in Mountain Lion if you found one that requires Mountain Lion.
You guys are fast! Thank you, I don't see any reason to burst in to Mountain Lion then, thanks again!
The only reason you would "need" to upgrade is if you would like to use the new features, or if its a requirement for something else you need (ie, the software you mentioned). However, in most cases there are workarounds or alternatives that can get you up and running.
