1. Changed the latest imovie's name to its specific version to 'protect it'.

2. Copied the folder called 'imovie (previous version' found in the Applications folder of an older computer, which housed imovie 6.0.4.

3. Pasted it into the Apps folder of the Mac Mini.

That is good to know for future reference - thanks. I think I will copy my 6.04 folder to an external for safekeeping. (I thought you had misunderstood my post and I was the one needing help....).

Tx for all the answers.

Unfortunatly I don't have iMovie 06 on an existing Mac so I can't copy/paste. My only option would be to use the iLife installer disks - which seems to be an issue as I read elsewhere that the installer overwrites the existing iMovie. (I'd back it up first if I could get Time Machine to work - but that's apparently another well known issue that Apple have failed to address...) I also apparently need something called Pacifier.

Grrr... I wish these "improved" versions of software were actually improvements. Having to try to find workarounds (not to mention track down and buy older software) to do something that was done better in prior versions is VERY frustrating to say the least...

If I get it and it works, I'll post back here - could be a while though as I have to find it first..!

I don't believe it will if you put the iMovie HD folder into a folder named "Previous version". Older iMovie versions (I beleive it was 08 or 09) created such a folder automatically, so I don't see why you can't create it and then install iMovie 11....

I've not tried to do this and my iMovie 11 is from a retail iLife disk (I do not buy anything at the app store), so I can't say if that will work or not - I'd make a full backup first and then:

uninstall iMovie 11 (drag to trash)

install iMovie 06 and then put in folder "previous version"

either drag iMovie 11 back from trash or, if that does not work,

go back to app store and reinstall.

If that does not work and/or it borks your system, simply use your backup to start over.

If you have an empty partition on an external drive, you could clone your system onto that and then do the experimenting there. If it works, it's fine and you can clone back or, if it doesn't, simply wipe that partition as you'll still have your system on the internal.

Hi Babowa,

My iMovie HD 6.0.4 was transferred, along with all the other files, from my previous (Snow Leopard) iMac to my new iMac with Mountain Lion already installed.

I've been using HD 6 on this ML iMac and it's been working perfectly in every respect - except, I can't get the zoom in/out (Ken Burns effect) to open. There is a 'bug'? somewhere because I did get it to appear once and used it on a clip. But, now I can't get it to appear anymore and all the photos in my media pane just do the same thing that I did when it did appear that once so I can't alter anything.

I checked this out on the old iMac and it works properly, so it seems the problem is with M.Lion.

Can you please help me to solve the effect problem.

Makey.

I believe the behavior was somewhat changed, but setting up the effect still works for me in ML - having said that, the only way I can get it to work is the following:

The photo has to be in iPhoto; in iMovie, go to Media > Photos and pick the photo. As soon as you drag your photo into iMovie, the Ken Burns popup screen comes up:

User uploaded file

And you can set duration etc at that point - but, as I said, it only seems to work if you are dragging it from within the iMovie sidebar/Photo browser.

Try that and post back to see if that works for you.

Hi Babowa -

I have just tested your claim that the pic has to be in iPhoto in order to achieve Ken Burns zoom effect. Not so. I have simply dragged photos from the Desktop into iMovie (6.0.3 - it's no different from 6.0.4) and applied the zoom effect as normal.

I wonder whether Makey has it all set up correctly? If Ken Burns Effect is ticked then all subsequent imports of photos will automatically have the original zoom setting embedded in them. If at some stage the Ken Burns Effect is unchecked, then subsequent photo imports will not have any zoom/pan applied.

PS - I am running Mountain Lion OS.

Dragging photos from the desktop has never worked for me if I want to use Ken Burns - do not know why except maybe that I prefer not to use Ken Burns and it is off mostly. I use a third-party application to create slideshows. It is much much better With the Burns effect. I then import them into iMovie.

Hi babowa,

Thank you for your reply.

I tried again by dragging a photo into the imovie timeline (from within the iMovie Media/Photos panel) and while this was happening I suddenly noticed something appear/disappear very quickly in the bottom right corner of the screen (only just in it). I then realized that was the Ken Burns Zoom pop up screen! Next time, I repeated the action, but this time I made sure to click on the pop up screen and drag it near to the iMovie project.

So, it had been there all the time but I just hadn't seen it!

For me also, it only works using photos from within the (iPhoto) Media/photos panel of iMovie.

Thanks again,

Makey.

Hi Makey - I'm really puzzled as to why you and babowa cannot get Ken Burns to work with photos that are dragged into the project from the desktop etc. There should be absolutely no problem with that approach. Are you actually adding such pics to the project line (which of course you must do) or are you trying to get Ken Burns to work with them while they are still in the Clips Pane? They must also be selected before KB will recognise them.

Aug 12, 2013 3:34 PM in response to makey

Hi Makey - once the photo is in the Timeline, select it, then click on the Media button (below the Clips Pane), then click the Photos button, and lastly click the Show Photo Settings button (at the bottom of the Photos window. This will bring up the small black Photo Settings window which has the adjustment sliders for Zoom and Duration. Make sure to tick the Ken Burns box if you want to apply those settings to your photo.

Note: any subsequent photo imports will have the same settings applied to them, until you make changes to the settings, or un-check the KB effect.

As far as I know, that will only work if you a) have photos in iPhoto and b) select one of them.

I do not have any photos in iPhoto (as I choose not to use it) except for the single photo I wish to import and, as mentioned and in my humble opinion, the Burns effect is quite poorly executed in iMovie.
